Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska women's gymnastics head coach Dan Kendig announced the hiring of Mike Heredia on Friday as the newest member of the Nebraska coaching staff.
"We're ecstatic about Mike joining our team," Kendig said. "This is the right time for him and right time for his family and we couldn't be more excited for him to join. With myself, Heather Brink and Russell Warfield and just the support group we have I believe he is going to fit in great and we will do great things."
Heredia was a student-athlete at Nebraska in 2010, competing on floor exercise and vault. His best finish came against Ohio State, UIC and Air Force, as he placed third on vault with a season-high score of 15.75. He transferred to Oklahoma and became an All-American on vault in 2012. As a Sooner he was also a 2012 Big Ten Conference champion and was part of a team that posted back-to-back NCAA runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2012.
After graduating, Heredia was an assistant coach for Iowa men's gymnastics team where he coached two All-Americans on rings as well as a Big Ten champion on rings. The Hawkeyes finished fifth that season and was the highest finish since 2006.
He co-founded and has co-coached Fuzion Gymnastics in Kearney, Mo, since 2013 and has gone on to graduate and send 14 gymnasts to college level competition. In 2018 Heredia led two level 10 teams to state championships.
"I’m excited to be back at Nebraska where the fan support is unmatched," Heredia said. "I started my collegiate career here at Nebraska, and I am happy to be back here as a coach. The staff has created a great culture and I’m excited to be a part of this prestigious program."
Heredia will coach vault and floor for the Huskers.
