Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska wrestling team will hold an open practice prior to the football game against Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 29. NU will practice at 11 a.m. at their practice facility inside the Hendricks Training Complex. Admission is free for all attendees.
“We decided to have an open workout for the public this weekend,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “Our fans are really excited about the team this year and we want to give them an up-close view to see how our guys compete. It’ll give them a chance to see the hard work our team puts in and get to know the new guys we got as well.”
The Huskers are coming off the 2017-18 season that saw them go 10-4 (7-2 B1G) in duals on their way to a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. NU went on to earn a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio two weeks later.
Nebraska faces a challenging schedule in 2018-19 that features 13 of the top 25 finishers nationally. Out of the top five finishers at the 2018 NCAA Championships, NU has duals against four of them this year. The Huskers make visits to Penn State (national champion) on Jan. 20, Ohio State (national runner-up) on Feb. 17 and NC State (T-4th) on Dec. 16. Iowa, who finished third, will travel to the Devaney Center for a dual on Feb. 3.
Seven Huskers qualified for the NCAA Championships last year and three placed in the top eight in their respective weight class. Chad Red Jr., a redshirt sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind., made his first NCAA appearance last year and finished seventh nationally at 141 pounds. Tyler Berger, a redshirt senior and two-time All-American, earned third place at 157 pounds. At 184 pounds, redshirt sophomore Taylor Venz made his first NCAA appearance and finished fourth. All three return this season to lead NU in Mark Manning’s 19th year at the helm.
The Huskers season officially begins on Thursday, Nov. 1 with the annual Coaches Clinic/Wrestle-Offs. Two weeks later, the Huskers welcome Wisconsin to the Devaney Center for their first home dual, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. The dual will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
