Huskers Finish Fall Season with Win

The Nebraska softball team wrapped up the Big Red Fall Classic early this afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Colorado State in an eight-inning game. The game was originally scheduled for 10-innings but was cut down two innings due to field conditions. Game two between Nebraska and Nebraska-Omaha was cancelled.

The only runs of the day came in the top of the fifth inning when Tristen Edwards blasted a double to deep right field to drive home both Alyvia Simmons and Rylie Unzicker. Both teams then went scoreless until the game was called after eight innings. The Rams outhit the Huskers 6-4 and the Big Red won by a final tally of 2-0.

Edwards led Nebraska at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single to right field in the fourth inning and the two-run shot to deep right field to plate two runners in the fifth inning. Edwards finished with both RBI’s. Alyvia Simmons and Madi Unzicker were the only other Huskers to record hits today.

Lauren Buchanan and Brenna Scudellari were the most productive Colorado State batters each with a double. Tara Shadowen, Nicole Valdez, Danni Klein and Haley Donaldson were the only other batters to record a hit for the Rams.

Courtney Wallace, Liv Ferrell and Lindsey Walljasper all saw time in the circle for the Huskers. Wallace picked up the pitching win and went 4.0 innings, fanning two batters while surrendering four hits and two walks. Ferrell threw 3.0 innings and gave up one hit and three walks to go with two strikeouts. Walljasper pitched the final inning and allowed one hit.

Taylor Gilmore was the starting pitcher for the Rams and went 7.0 innings. She allowed four hits, two runs and five walks, while racking up three K’s. Kailyn McVay threw the final inning and did not give up any runs, hits or errors.

Nebraska concluded the Big Red Fall Classic with a record of 2-1 and wrapped up the fall season with an overall record of 6-1. The Huskers will return to action on February 8-10 in Houston, Texas for the Lone Star Classic.
