The Nebraska beach volleyball team began its 2019 season with a 5-0 sweep of Missouri Baptist in the Hawks Championship Center on Tuesday.
The Huskers swept four of the five matches, while Missouri Baptist picked up a win in an exhibition.
Nicklin Hames and Lauren Stivrins teamed up as NU's No. 1 pair and posted a 22-20, 21-16 win, before Madi Kubik and Mari Kurkova took the court and recorded a dominant 21-12, 21-16 win. Kenzie Knuckles and Jazz Sweet clinched the match with a 21-13, 21-14 win at the No. 3 spot, and the No. 5 pair of Hayley Densberger and Anezka Szabo teamed up for a 21-19, 21-13 victory. The final match of the day that counted was Megan Miller and Callie Schwarzenbach in the No. 4 pair, and they won in three sets, 21-13, 16-21, 15-10.
"Today was a good first day of competition for our Husker beach volleyball team," coach Jaylen Reyes said. "We got a lot of great experience for a bunch of players, and also a new head beach volleyball coach. We hope to use the experience gained in this match against Missouri Baptist and take it into our matches in San Diego this weekend."
The Huskers are scheduled to play matches against Concordia Irvine, Grossmont College, West Valley (twice), Rio Hondo, MiraCosta and San Diego Mesa on Friday-Sunday in San Diego.
