Houston, Texas. - The Nebraska softball team (2-2) fell to Texas Tech (3-0) in its second game of the day on Saturday by a score of 4-1.
Regan Mergele (0-1) pitched 4.0 innings for the Huskers. She gave up two runs on four hits and recorded five strikeouts. Lindsey Walljasper also pitched 3.0 innings for Nebraska, giving up two runs on two hits and recording four strikeouts.
TTU's Missy Zoch got the win, improving to 1-0 on the season, while Erin Edmoundson got the save. Zoch went 4.2 innings. She gave up one run on five hits and had eight strikeouts.
The Husker offense had five hits on the day. Rylie Unzicker, Walljasper, Courtney Wallace, Madi Unzicker and Tristen Edwards each had one hit.
Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of singles, but Nebraska wasted no time responding. In the bottom of the inning, Nebraska tied the game 1-1 after a pair of singles from Rylie Unzicker and Lindsey Walljasper.
TTU took back the lead in the second. A leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position. A single brought her home, putting the Red Raiders up 2-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Huskers threatened but came up empty. Lexey Kneib was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She stole second and advanced to third on an error in TTU's attempt to throw her out. Simmons drew a walk and stole second to put both runners in scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout ended in the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nebraska had another chance to score some runs. The Big Red put two runners on with two outs after Edwards doubled and Walljasper drew a walk. Raley pinch ran for Walljasper and Wallace drew another walk to load the bases. This prompted a TTU pitching change and the new pitcher got a strikeout to end the inning.
TTU took a 3-1 lead in the sixth after a walk and a double scored one run. The Red Raiders scored again after a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Nebraska attempted its comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Samantha Owen pinch hit for the Huskers and drew a walk to put a runner on. However, the Huskers couldn't score as Texas Tech retired the next three batters.
