Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Nebraska softball (10-14, 0-1 Big Ten) team held No. 25 Michigan (17-10) scoreless for 4.0 innings, but the Wolverines scored eight runs in two innings en route to a 8-0 run-rule victory on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader.
All-American Meghan Beaubien (10-3) pitched a complete 6.0 innings. She gave up one hit, one walk and recorded 10 strikeouts.
Lindsey Walljasper started the game and pitched 4.0 innings. She gave up three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Olivia Ferrell (3-4) pitched 1.1 innings of relief and gave up eight runs - seven earned - on five hits. She had three walks and one strikeout.
Alyvia Simmons had Nebraska's lone hit on the day. She went 1-for-2 with a walk.
In the first, Simmons drew a leadoff walk to put a base runner on right away for the Huskers. With one out, she stole second and reached third on a ground out. However, a big strikeout stranded Simmons. In the bottom of the inning, Michigan hit a one-out double to put a runner in scoring position. A hard-hit ball should have went over the wall, but Rylie Unzicker made a big play to save two runs. She reached over the wall and while the ball came loose, she kept it in play and the lead runner only reached third. A walk loaded the bases, but the Huskers retired the next two batters to get out of the jam without allowing a run.
Michigan got two base runners in the second with a single and a walk, but Nebraska didn't allow a run.
In the third, Simmons hit a two-out single, but was stranded as Michigan got a big strikeout.
In the fifth, Michigan took a 4-0 lead. The Wolverines drew a leadoff walk and singled to put two runners on with no outs. A ground out moved both runners over and a walk loaded the bases. A ground ball scored one run and hit down the first base line scored two more. On the next play, Nebraska got the lead runner out in a run down for the second out. With a runner at third, a wild pitch allowed another run to score.
In the bottom of the sixth, a single and a walk put two runners on and a double scored one run, extending Michigan's lead to 5-0. A three-run homer ended the game, due to the mercy rule.
Nebraska and Michigan will play game two of the doubleheader at approximately 3:20 p.m.
