Peyton Glatter made her first-career start in left field against Michigan. Samantha Owen hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to break Nebraska's four-game shut out skid. Samantha Owen had two hits, tying her career-high at Nebraska. |
Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Nebraska softball team (10-15, 0-2 Big Ten) fell to No. 25 Michigan (18-10, 2-0 Big Ten) by a score of 7-2 on Saturday in game two of a doubleheader. With the win, the Wolverines take the series after also winning game one.
Samantha Owen led the Husker offense, going 2-for-2 with a home run. She also had two RBIs, one run and a walk. As a team, Nebraska had six hits. Alyvia Simmons also had two hits on the day, while Tristen Edwards and Sarah Yocom each had one.
Regan Mergele started and dropped to 1-6 on the season. She pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five runs on four hits. She also had one strikeout. Courtney Wallace pitched 4.0 innings of relief. She gave up two runs on three hits and also had two strikeouts.
Alex Storako (7-6) pitched 4.1 innings. She gave up two runs on four hits and also recorded five strikeouts.
Michigan took a quick 3-0 lead in the first, without getting the ball out of the infield. A bunt single and a walk put two runners on and a wild pitch moved them both into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases. Michigan hit a ground ball to the shortstop who opted to go home to try to get the runner out, but it wasn't in time as Michigan scored one run. Mergele got a strikeout, but a walk score another run. A fielder's choice - that didn't record an out - scored a third run. NU got out of the inning with a foul out fly ball to first base.
In the second, Owen drew a one-out walk to get Nebraska its first base runner, but was stranded as Michigan retired the next two batters. In the bottom of the inning, the Wolverines loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Another single scored two runs, extending the lead to 5-0.
Simmons recorded Nebraska's first hit of the game in the third, but she was stranded at first as a pop up ended the game.
Wallace came into the game for the third inning and for the first time in the game, Michigan went through an inning without scoring a run.
In the top of the fourth, Edwards hit a leadoff single and stole second to get in scoring position with one out. Then, Owen homered to give the Huskers two runs and cut the lead to 5-2.
In the fifth, Yocom hit a one-out single which prompted a Michigan pitching change. Then, Simmons reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Wallace hit a deep ball that was caught by the right fielder, but it allowed Yocom to tag and advance to third. With two outs and runners on the corners, Edwards was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Michigan retired the next batter to leave the bases loaded. In the bottom of the inning, the Wolverines hit two singles to put a pair on. A sac bunt moved them both over and a sac fly scored one run. A single scored another run, but Glatter made a great throw from right field to get the runner out at third to end the inning.
In the sixth, Owen hit a leadoff single and Carson Fischer pinch ran for her, but a strikeout and a double play squashed NU's offensive momentum.
Nebraska attempted its comeback in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Simmons singled up the middle, but a pop up ended the game.
