West Lafayette, Ind. - Nebraska (14-23, 3-8 Big Ten) trailed Purdue (29-16, 6-7 Big Ten) 5-2 heading into the fifth inning, but the Huskers scored five unanswered runs to pull off a come-from-behind 7-5 victory on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader.
Nebraska finished with nine hits. Lindsey Walljasper, Lexey Kneib and Madi Unzicker each had two hits on the day. For Kneib, it tied a career best. Madi Unzicker finished with two RBIs while Walljasper finished with one. Kneib also scored one run. Tristen Edwards, Courtney Wallace and Peyton Glatter also had one hit on the day.
Regan Mergele improved to 2-6 on the season. She had an impressive outing, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings of relief and giving up three hits. She also had five strikeouts and one walk. Walljasper started the game for the Cornhuskers and pitched 3.0 innings. She gave up five runs on eight hits and also had two strikeouts and two walks.
Nebraska took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Edwards drew a one-out walk and stole second. Owen also drew a walk to put a pair of runners on. With two outs, Madi Unzicker singled to score one run and Wallace followed suit to score Owen. Purdue responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs off three hits.
The Boilermakers extended their lead in the third after back-to-back solo home runs.
In the top of the fifth, Kneib drew a leadoff walk and Rylie Unzicker pinch ran for her. Unzicker stole second and reached third on an error as the catcher attempted to catch her stealing, but overthrew the base. Edwards doubled to score her and cut the lead to 5-3. Owen drew a walk and Carson Fischer pinch ran for her. Walljasper singled to load the bases and Madi Unzicker singled to plate one run. Wallace reached on a fielder's choice as Purdue got the force out at home, but the bases were still loaded. However, a fly out got Purdue out of the jam, but not before Nebraska cut the lead to 5-4.
In the sixth, Nebraska scored three runs to take a 7-5 lead. Kneib started the run with a one-out single. Simmons and Edwards drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for the Huskers. Owen reached on a fielding error which allowed two runs to score. Walljasper doubled to score another run.
Purdue threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on first and two outs, a double put runners on first and third and brought the winning run to the plate. However, the Huskers retired the next batter to end the game and get the victory.
