Las Vegas, Nev. – One former wrestler and eight current Nebraska wrestlers are competing at the U.S. Open this weekend in Las Vegas. Two-time world medalist James Green (70 kg) and Huskers senior Christian Lance (125 kg) are competing in the Senior Men’s Freestyle brackets, while seven other Huskers on the 2018-19 roster are battling it out in the UWW Junior Freestyle brackets.
Six of the eight current Huskers competing are coming off of redshirt years, while Jevon Parrish started eight duals for NU at 133 pounds and finished in ninth place at the Big Ten Championships.
Alex Thomsen (57 kg), Jevon Parrish (61 kg), Christian Miller (65 kg), Peyton Robb (70 kg), Jake Silverstein (70 kg), Anthony Gaona (86 kg), Christian Lance (125 kg) and Austin Emerson (125 kg) are all potential contributors in the Husker lineup for the 2019-20 season.
Thomsen, who will compete for the starting spot at 125 pounds next season, went 13-2 in open tournaments this season, which included first place finishes at the Grand View Open, UNK Holiday Inn Open, and Dave Edmunds Open.
Christian Miller (133) went 3-6 in his redshirt season and started in three duals. Peyton Robb (157), a freshman from Owatonna, Minn., was named the team’s “Redshirt of the Year” by the coaching staff after he went 22-3 in open tournaments with three championships. He will likely replace graduated senior Tyler Berger in the starting lineup.
Jake Silverstein (157) also redshirted and went 9-5 in his first season as a Husker. Olathe, Kan., native, Anthony Gaona (197) notched an 18-9 record in year one while Austin Emerson (285) went 19-6 with nine wins by pinfall.
James Green (70 kg) and Christian Lance (125 kg) began competition in Senior Men’s Freestyle action this morning and will compete throughout the day today and tomorrow. NU wrestlers competing in the UWW Junior Freestyle tournament begin action at 5 p.m. CT tonight.
