Lincoln, Neb. -- The Huskers wrestling team has added Amarillo, Texas, native Johnathon "Speedy" Ortegon to the 2019-20 roster. Ortegon will be a walk-on who will compete for time in the Husker lineup at 125 pounds. Ortegon was a three-time state champion at Randall High School in Amarillo.
Husker Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning is excited to get Ortegon on campus.
"We've known Speedy for a while and had him here for camp last summer," Manning said. "We believe his work ethic and toughness will bode well for his future here at Nebraska. We're excited to have him as part of our family.”
Ortegon took third place at the western regional in Las Vegas, winning every match by either tech. fall or pinfall after losing his first-round bout. He also finished as the Texas state runner-up at 125 pounds this season.
NU volunteer assistant Eric Montoya spent a lot of time recruiting Ortegon, and he thinks the Huskers are getting an outstanding wrestler and person.
"Speedy is going to be a big asset to our team because he fills our need for more lightweights," Montoya said. "He's a great kid who comes from an awesome family. He just fits naturally in our program."
The Huskers will need to replace graduated senior and two-time All-American Zeke Moisey at 125 pounds next season.
