Lincoln, Nebraska - The Nebraska softball team split a doubleheader against Colorado State in the first two games of the Big Red Fall Classic on Saturday. The Huskers won the first game by a score of 8-6, before dropping the second game in extra innings, 4-3.
Pitchers Olivia Ferrell, Courtney Wallace and Karlee Seevers all saw time in the circle.
Game 1: Nebraska - 8, Colorado State - 6
In the bottom of the first, Nebraska took a quick 2-0 lead over the Rams. Cam Ybarra and Peyton Glatter found their way home for the Huskers.
The Rams tightened Nebraska's lead in the top of the second, scoring one run. The Huskers responded in the bottom of the second with a run from Sarah Yocom, followed by a two-run homer from Tristen Edwards. Nebraska took a 5-1 lead into the third inning.
Colorado State cut the lead with two straight solo home runs in the top of the third. Keana Pola responded in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to right field to take a 6-3 lead into the fourth.
Nebraska extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth as Anni Raley made her way home on a sacrifice fly. The Huskers led 7-3 after four innings.
Colorado State cut Nebraska's lead to one run with a triple that brought three Rams home in the top of the fifth. NU led 7-6 heading into the sixth inning.
Edwards hit her second homer of the game, a solo shot to left field to extend Nebraska's lead to 8-6 after six innings.
Olivia Ferrell finished out the game for the Huskers in the seventh, pitching 5.0 innings in Nebraska's 8-6 win.
Game 2: Nebraska - 3, Colorado State - 4
Nebraska took an early lead on the Rams as Glatter sent Edwards home on a double. NU led 1-0 heading into the second inning.
Both teams played well defensively through the top of the fifth, as the score remained 1-0 in favor of Nebraska. The Huskers extended their lead as Carson Fischer ran home off an error by Colorado State. Nebraska took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.
Nebraska extended its lead on the Rams in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Pola hit a sacrifice fly that sent Brooke Andrews home. The Huskers led 3-0 at the end of the sixth inning.
The Rams mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning, tying the game 3-3. Nebraska left three runners on base in the bottom of the seventh as the game entered extra innings.
Colorado State took the lead in the top of the eighth inning off a solo homer to right field. Nebraska was unable to respond in the bottom of the eighth as the Rams took the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 4-3.
Pitcher Courtney Wallace pitched a shutout through 6 innings, and pitched all 8.0 innings for the Huskers.
This concludes Nebraska's fall season. The Huskers will begin the spring season on Feb. 6-9 at the New Mexico State Tournament in Las Cruces, NM.
