Coyotes defeat Huskers, 7-2

Lincoln, Nebraska - The Nebraska softball team fell to the South Dakota Coyotes in the final game of the Big Red Fall Classic on Sunday by a score of 7-2. 

In the top of the first, South Dakota got off to a fast start as the Coyotes took a 4-0 lead. Nebraska was unable to respond in the bottom of the inning. 

Courtney Wallace entered the game for NU at the top of the second inning. The Huskers were unable to cut the deficit through the fourth, despite recording five hits. 

The Coyotes extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning on a single that brought one runner home. The Huskers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to bring any runners home. South Dakota took a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning. 

South Dakota once again extended its lead on the Huskers with a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning to go up 7-0. 

Nebraska solved South Dakota pitcher Holly Fletcher in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Cam Ybarra hit a two-run homer to right field to cut the Coyotes lead to 7-2. NU was unable to complete the comeback, as South Dakota picked up the win. 

Olivia Ferrell started the game for NU, pitching 1.0 innings. She allowed four runs on three hits. Wallace pitched the remaining 6.0 innings for Nebraska, allowing three runs on seven hits. Fletcher pitched 7.0 innings for the Coyotes, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Huskers finish the Big Red Fall Classic with a record of 1-2. This concludes Nebraska's fall season. NU will begin the spring season on Feb. 6-9 at the New Mexico State Tournament in Las Cruces, NM.
