Las Cruces, N.M. ---- An impressive overall performance on Saturday morning helped the Nebraska softball team (2-1) top Bradley (1-2) by a score of 8-1. It served as the first of two games on the day for the Huskers as part of the Troy Cox Classic.
Lindsey Walljapser pitched a gem of a game going the distance and giving up just one run on three hits. She also added seven strikeouts and improved to 1-1 on the season.
At the plate, the Huskers were equally as impressive. As a team, Nebraska had eight hits which included three home runs from Tristen Edwards, Peyton Glatter and Payton Huscroft. Glatter led the Huskers going 2-for-4. Cam Ybarra, Courtney Wallace, Walljasper and Brooke Andrews each had one hit as well.
Bradley scored first plating one run off three singles in the top of third. Up one, the Braves had two runners in scoring position with no outs but Huskers limited further damage by retiring the next three batters.
Nebraska took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, capitalizing on a Bradley error. The Huskers loaded the bases with no outs. Glatter singled to pick up NU's first hit of the game. Keana "KP" Pola drew a walk and Wallace singled to put three runners on. The Braves got a force out at home for the first out. Walljasper reached on a fielder's choice and Pola scored. The play should have resulted in an out at third but a Bradley fielding error allowed all runners to advance a base. With the bases loaded, Unzicker drew a walk to give Nebraska the lead.
In the fifth, Ybarra hit a leadoff double and Bree Boruff pinch ran for her. Pola drew a walk to put two runners on. Wallace reached on a fielder's choice and Pola reached third on the play on an error. Then Huscroft homered to put the Huskers up 5-1. Walljasper doubled and Karlee Seevers pinch ran for her. Andrews came in as a pinch hitter and singled to score Seevers and extend the lead to 6-1.
In the sixth, Edwards homered and Glatter followed suit to put the Huskers up 8-1. In the top of the seventh, Walljasper allowed the leadoff runner to get on base but then struck out the next three batters to finish the game.
Nebraska will play its second game of the day at approximately 3 p.m. CT against UTEP. A live radio broadcast will be available on Huskers.com and the game will be streamed on FloSoftball (subscription required).
