Lincoln – Griffin Everitt's two-run double broke a 3-3 deadlock, as the Red team posted a 6-3 win over the Black team during the Huskers' first scrimmage of the fall.
Everitt, a junior college transfer who played his high school ball at Lincoln Southwest, provided the game winner, as his bloop double to center dropped just beyond the grasp of former high school teammate Luke Sartori, plating Spencer Schwellenbach and Joe Acker with the go-ahead run.
Second-year Nebraska Coach Will Bolt was pleased with the level of play for the Huskers' first live game action at Hawks Field since early March.
"We are far from a finished product, but for the first day out, it was a very clean game," Bolt said. "We threw strikes for the most part and to not see an error on the board for either side was a good look. Offensively, we took some good swings, so we checked the boxes that we were hoping to check for the first day out. Now the goal is to continue to get better every day."
Thursday's scrimmage had 38 thousand views on Facebook throughout the afternoon.
Husker pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts during the six-inning scrimmage, including four apiece from Cam Wynne (Red) and Cade Povich (Black) during two-inning stints.
The Red squad took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo homer from Luke Boynton, only to see the Black squad respond with three runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by an RBI doubles from Luke Roskam and Sartori.
The Red Team pushed across single runs in both the fourth and fifth frames, getting an RBI double from Schwellenbach in the fourth before Cam Chick tied the score one inning later on an RBI single to center
