Cream Outscores Scarlet 13-6 in Scrimmage

The Husker softball team played its first of two intrasquad scrimmages Thursday afternoon where Team Cream outscored Team Scarlet 13-6 in a five-inning game at Bowlin Stadium.

There was plenty of offense in the game as the teams combined for 19 runs and 14 hits. Every inning started with at least one runner on base, aiding the offensive output. For the Scarlet, freshman Ava Bredwell and senior Cam Ybarra led the way, both with a 2-for-3 day.

For the Cream, sophomore Billie Andrews recorded a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored and three RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Andrews also notched the only home run of the day, a three-run shot.

In the circle, sophomore Kaylin Kinney and senior Olivia Ferrell split the innings for the Cream. Kinney recorded two strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs on just three hits in 2.0 innings. Ferrell recorded one strikeout and allowed only one unearned run on three hits over 3.0 innings, recording a pair of scoreless frames in the first and the fifth.

For the Scarlet, seniors Courtney Wallace and Karlee Seevers split the innings. Wallace allowed six earned runs over 3.0 innings while recording two strikeouts. Seevers allowed three earned runs on just one hit while recording one strikeout  in 2.0 innings. Wallace recorded the only scoreless inning for the Scarlet which came in the first inning.

Throughout the game, each team was put in various baserunner situations. In the first inning, a runner was placed on first base at the start of both half innings but neither team scored.

Runners were placed on second base to start each half of the second inning. Bredwell took advantage of the situation and hit an RBI single to left field. Later in the inning, Seevers hit a fly ball to center field, bringing Bredwell home for the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Team Cream answered back in the bottom of the second when senior Peyton Glatter had a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in the runner that started on second.

In the third inning, a runner was placed on third at the start of each half inning. Ybarra led off the inning with an RBI single to through the right side. Junior transfer Mya Felder followed it up with a single to center field. Sophomore Camyl Armendariz reached first on a fielder's choice before Bredwell grounded out on a double play to end the inning.

Cream responded with their highest-scoring inning of the afternoon with six runs in the bottom of the third. After a walk put two runners in scoring position, senior Anni Raley singled to left field bringing in the runner for the first run of the inning. A passed ball brought sophomore Abbie Squier home for the second run of the inning. Sophomore Abbie Newlun and junior Brooke Andrews both drove in a run with singles to the outfield. Ferrell brought in two more runners after a double to left field to cap the six-run, five-hit inning.

A runner was placed on second and third to start the fourth inning. The Scarlet capitalized on the situation when an error allowed McKinley Malecha to reach first. Ybarra capitalized on the error, hitting a single to right field and bringing in two runs. The three-run inning cut Cream's lead to one heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Cream extended their lead in the bottom the fourth with three runs. With the two runners on base to start the inning, Billie Andrews took advantage with a three-run homer for the only hit of the inning.

At the start of the fifth inning, a runner was placed on first and second. Scarlet had its last attempt to cut the lead but was unsuccessful after leaving three runners on base.

The Cream finished the afternoon strong. Glatter took advantage of the runners on base, hitting a single up the middle notching her second RBI on the day. After Ferrell was walked, Squier singled to the outfield, adding another run. Raley then hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field bringing in Glatter.
