Erika Freyhof finished third with a time of 16:52.1 at the Chile Pepper Festival on Friday evening. Freyhof's time is the fastest confirmed time by a Husker in a 5K race since 1999. The last known fastest time was set by Sammie Resh at the 1988 NCAA Championships with a time of 16:48.
The Husker women placed fourth with 187 points in the team standings, two points shy of Augustana in third place. The Nebraska men finished ninth in the team standings with 346 points. Arkansas took home the women's title with 45 points while the men's side was won by Colorado Mesa with a total of 39 points.
Grace Pagone also finished in the top-15 for the Big Red, posting a time of 17:21.0 to place 14th out of 322 runners. Hannah Godwin was the third Husker to cross the finish line with a time of 17:37.2 to finish 31st. Brynna McQuillen ran a time of 18:04.1 to place 62nd, followed by Jacquelyn Abanses in 79th with a time of 18:18.3.
"For the women, that was a great meet today," said head coach Matt Wackerly. "We ran a smart and poised race and moved up well throughout the race. Erika ran extremely well against a very strong field, and the rest of the women showed poise beyond their years."
Ryan Martins led the Big Red men for the second meet in a row, covering the course in 24:10.1 to place ninth out of 327 runners. Mark Freyhof posted a time of 25:22.8 to finish 66th. Jack Ehlert clocked a time of 25:51.8 and placed 106th, followed by Bailey Timmons in 112th-place with a time of 25:57.5. Jerry Jorgenson placed 121st and crossed the finish line with a time of 26:02.3.
"On the men's side, I thought Ryan had an outstanding race today," added Wackerly. "We are not where we want to be, but we are getting better in each race this season."
