Huskers Travel West to Continue Non-Conference Play

The Nebraska softball team is set for a tournament in California hosted by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. The Huskers will play five games, starting with a matchup against Sacramento State on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. CT. 

Following game one, the Huskers will take on Cal State Fullerton on its home field at 4:30 p.m. CT. 

The Huskers will have one game on Sunday against Boston. NU will take on the 2021 Patriot League Championships at 11 a.m. CT. 

NU will finish the weekend with two games on Sunday. At 11 a.m. CT, the Huskers will face Central Florida. Later, Nebraska will face Long Beach State on its home field at 4 p.m. CT. 

Scouting the Opponents
Sacramento State (11-8) is on a five-game win streak after going undefeated at the Capital Classic. The Hornets are led by Marissa Bertuccio and Lewa Day, who both received Big Sky Conference weekly honors this past week. As a team, the Hornets are batting .285 and holding opponents to .278.

Cal State Fullerton (14-8) competed at the Judi Garman Classic, finishing the weekend 3-2. The Titans picked up wins against Kansas, Fresno State and Weber State, but fell to Seattle and Utah.Hannah Becerra leads the Titans with a .391 batting average including seven home runs. In the circle, Myka Sutherlin (4-3) and Alexia Silvas (4-2) lead both with four wins. 

Boston (10-10) finishing 3-2 last weekend at the San Diego Classic. The Terriers started slow, losing to California and Utah State, but finished the last three games with wins against UC San Diego, San Diego and San Diego State. Junior Lizzy Avery (5-6. 3.32 ERA) has made 12 starts for the Terriers, tallying 54 strikeouts in 563.1 innings. Offensively, Kayla Roncin leads BU with a .433 batting average and 17 RBIs. 

Central Florida (17-7) is on a six-game win streak following victories over Fresno State, Pacific, South Carolina and three against Florida Gulf Coast. Shannon Doherty leads the Knights with a .357 batting average, three home run sand 14 RBIs. In the circle, Gianna Mancha (6-2) leads with 35 strikeouts and a 3.24 ERA. 

Long Beach State (8-10) tallied a 3-1 record at the San Diego Classic. The Beach picked up wins against Utah State, San Diego and San Diego State, but fell to Stony Brook in eight innings. Leading the offense is senior Naomi Hernandez, batting .436 with 24 hits and 8 RBIs.
