The Loyola Project tells the story about the 1963 Loyola Ramblers and their battle against racism and inequality at a pivotal time in American history. At a time when it was uncommon for college basketball teams to play more than three Black players at any one time, the 1963 Ramblers started four Black players and won the NCAA championship. This team not only revolutionized the way college basketball was played, but also battled and overcame extreme racism both on and off the court.
"We have come a long way in our country since the time when this story took place, but it is important for us to acknowledge the integral role these courageous student-athletes and coaches played in paving the way for our current student-athletes," said Dr. Lawrence Chatters, Executive Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. "We are fortunate to have a coach and a former Husker who are willing to engage in these difficult but necessary conversations."
The 63 for 63 Screening Series is presented by Northwestern Mutual, as Nebraska is one of 63 colleges and universities around the United States and Canada that will host screenings of The Loyola Project. For more information on The Loyola Project, visit theloyolaproject.com
