Courtney Wallace recorded her third shutout of the weekend as the Nebraska softball team (4-1) finished the weekend with a 2-0 victory over Virginia (4-1). It was Mya Felder on offense that proved to be the difference maker as the senior smashed a two-run home run in the fourth inning to mark the only runs of the game.
Wallace moved to 3-0 on the year, pitching the complete game shutout. The senior tallied four strikeouts while holding the Cavaliers to six hits. Wallace also had a team-high two hits on offense.
In the circle for Virginia was Molly Grube who fell to 1-1 on the season after recording the loss. Grube pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three hits, including the two-run home run shot.
Virginia was the first to put a runner in scoring position. With one out, two singles put runners at first and second, but the left side of the field was able to record a double play, getting the Huskers out of the first inning and holding the Cavaliers scoreless.
The Cavaliers looked to score in the bottom of the second. With two outs, a walk put Leah Boggs at first. Boggs stole second and third, but a ground out got the Huskers out of the inning as the score stayed 0-0.
After a quiet third inning, the Huskers took the lead in the top of the fourth inning after a two-run shot from Felder. Wallace led off with a single up the middle. With one out, Felder hit a two-run shot to left field, giving NU the 2-0 advantage.
Mary Caroline Eaton recorded the third hit of the day for Virginia with a single through the right side, but the Big Red defense recorded three straight outs to deny the Cavaliers any runs, holding on to the 2-0 lead.
The Huskers threatened in the sixth inning. With one out, Wallace singled to right field followed by a walk from Sydney Gray. A passed ball advanced Wallace and Gray to second and third. However, the Cavaliers were able to get out of it with two straight outs. NU still held the lead, 2-0.
Virginia looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh after a one-out single. After Wallace recorded a strikeout, a single to right field put runners on the corners, but NU ended the game with a fly out to right. The Huskers claimed the 2-0 shutout victory.
