Huskers Sweep Series with 4-2 Victory

The Nebraska softball team (30-13, 10-4 Big Ten) earned the series sweep after winning 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader against Indiana (31-13, 9-5 Big Ten) on Saturday afternoon in Bloomington. 

Sydney Gray was one of four Huskers who recorded two hits this afternoon. Gray finished 2-for-4 on the day with a double and a home run, two runs and two RBI. Brooke Andrews and Abbey Newlun each added two hits as Nebraska totaled nine hits on the afternoon. Indiana was led by Sarah Stone who recorded two of the Hoosiers' five hits. Stone finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. 

Courtney Wallace moved to 19-8 on the season, earning the complete-game victory. Wallace held the Hoosiers to five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six. 

Brianna Copeland (15-3) recorded the loss for Indiana. Copeland pitched the final 4.1 innings, giving up four hits and one run. Macy Montgomery started in the circle for the Hoosiers, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up five hits and three runs. 

The Huskers got ahead early with two runs in the first inning. Billie Andrews led off with a single. With one out, Gray doubled, scoring Andrews. With two outs, Brooke Andrews added a single, scoring Gray to put the Big Red ahead 2-0. 

Indiana responded with one run in the bottom of the first. With one out, a single gave IU its first baserunner. With two outs, a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position. A single from Stone scored one, but the Huskers maintained the lead, 2-1, going into the second inning. 

Brooke Andrews smashed her 11th homer of the season with a solo shot in the top of the third to extend the Husker lead to 3-1. 

Sydney Gray hit the second NU home run of the game in the top of the seventh, adding to the Big Red lead as Nebraska went into the bottom of the seventh ahead, 4-1. 

The Hoosiers looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Cora Bassett led off, reaching on an NU fielding error. With one out, a batter was walked to put runners at first and second. Stone doubled down the left field line, scoring one, but Nebraska was able to record the next two outs, securing the game three win, 4-2. 

The Huskers return to action Tuesday, April 19 for the final non-conference game of the regular season against Creighton at Bowlin Stadium. Game Notes

  • Courtney Wallace moved to 19-8 on the season. This marks the most wins in a season for the fifth-year senior. 
  • Brooke Andrews recorded her 11th homer of the season. This marks a career-best for home runs in a season by the fourth-year junior.
