Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White met with members of the media following Friday’s practice. White addressed his expectations for the defense in this upcoming season and the versatile roster.
“There’s some guys that played really fast and physical,” White said. “The X’s and O’s part we can always correct, but it was fun to watch some of the guys be able to line up and play without thinking. That goes back to what the coaches are teaching in the classroom: getting guys to absorb the information and be able to process it that fast.”
White addressed the improvements he’s seen in the defensive line towards the end of fall camp.
“It’s most noticeable when you see the guys up front come off the ball and you see them play,” he said. “The front is where it starts, and when they are playing physical and fast, you got a chance. I like where our guys are at.”
He also spoke about his own learning experience with Coach Rhule and how they are looking at the athletic attributes of each player.
“From day one, Coach Rhule addressed his desire to develop players,” White said. “The neat thing is I’m also learning from him. It’s one thing to hear Coach speak all the time and another to apply it.”
The Huskers will return to the field on Saturday as they continue prep for the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Minnesota.
