Huskers Open Fall Season at Visit Knoxville Collegiate

The Nebraska men’s golf team kicks off its 2023-24 season by traveling to Tennessee for the Visit Knoxville Collegiate, Sept. 8-10. 

Following a practice round on Thursday, the 54-hole tournament begins on Friday, Sept. 8 with Nebraska tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m. (CT). Action continues with the second round on Saturday, Sept. 9, when the Huskers are scheduled to begin with tee times at 9:45 a.m. (CT). The tournament concludes with Sunday’s final round, with tee times determined by position in the team standings.

All three rounds in the 14-team tournament will be played on a par-70, 7,280-yard layout at the Tennessee National Golf Club in Loudon, Tenn. 

In addition to the hosts from Tennessee, the Huskers will be joined by Clemson, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, along with Wisconsin, USF, UConn, Cincinnati, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, Toledo and North Florida in the 14-team field.

Second-year Nebraska head coach Judd Cornell will lead an experienced lineup of five returning lettermen to Tennessee.

Senior Gentry Scheve (Emporia, Kan.) earned the top spot in qualifying heading to Tennessee, after closing the 2022-23 season strong. Scheve earned lineup spots in each of Nebraska’s final four events last season, including a career-best fourth-place individual finish with a 215 (69-72-74) at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate (April 22-23). His performance in Illinois followed a career-best 208 (-8) at the Tiger Collegiate (April 10-11). Scheve’s second-round 66 (-6) helped the Huskers to the best team round in school history with a 274 (-14).

Nebraska’s most experienced returning golfer, Will Marshall (Elburn, Ill.) returns for his fifth season as a Husker. Marshall led Nebraska with five top-25 finishes a year ago while posting a 73.68 stroke average.

Junior Harry Crockett set a school record with a 71.82 stroke average over 11 fall rounds in 2022-23. Crockett, a two-time NJCAA All-American at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, did not compete for the Huskers during the spring.

Scheve, Marshall and Crockett represented Nebraska among the 2023-24 Big Ten Preseason Men’s Golfers to Watch announced Aug. 29. 

Nebraska natives Grant Jabenis (Omaha, Neb.) and Reed Malleck (York, Neb.) round out Nebraska’s lineup in the five-count-four scoring format at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate.
Malleck, who is entering his fourth season as a Husker,  was Nebraska’s top finisher at the 2023 Big Ten Championship, tying for 41st over two rounds at the rain-shortened event in Galloway, N.J. Malleck ranked second among the Huskers with 22 rounds played a year ago. 

Jabenis, a junior who enters his second season as a Husker, competed in 20 rounds for the Big Red last season and posted a solid 74.50 stroke average. He finished just one stroke back of Malleck at the 2023 Big Ten Championship.
