Nebraska men's golfer Gentry Scheve fired a 69 (-2) to share third place in local qualifying at the Omaha Country Club on Wednesday, May 8 to earn one of four spots in final qualifying over the next few weeks for the 2024 U.S. Open.
Scheve, a senior from Emporia, Kan., will take part in final U.S. Open qualifying at one of 13 sites around the country from May 20 through June 3, with hopes of earning a spot in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, June 13-16.
Scheve was one of 78 golfers to compete in the qualifier at the Omaha Country Club, which was one of 109 sites across 44 U.S. states and Canada to host qualifying from April 22-May 20. Scheve's 18-hole total of 69 (-2) trailed only Alex and Carson Schaake's 67 (-4), while matching Nate Vontz. Former Husker Ryan Nietfeldt earned a spot as an alternate with a 70 (-1).
Current Nebraska teammates Evan McDermott (73), Evan Myers (74) and Grant Jabenis (74) added top-15 finishes at the qualifier, while current Husker Head Coach Judd Cornell tied for 19th with a 75.
The 10 sites for final qualifying in the United States include the Dallas Athletic Club (May 20) and nine courses that will host qualifying on June 3, including Lake Merced Golf Club (Daly City, Calif.), The Bear's Club (Jupiter, Fla.), The Golf Club of Georgia (Alpharetta, Ga.), Woodmont Country Club (Rockville, Md.), Canoe Brook Country Club (Summit, N.J.), Old Chatham Golf Club (Durham, N.C.), Ohio State University Golf Club and Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club (Columbus, Ohio), Springfield (Ohio) Country Club and Pronghorn Resort (Bend, Ore.).
