Nebraska track and field’s Axelina Johansson was named a first-team Academic All-American and Emanuela Casadei was named a third-team Academic All-American on Tuesday as the College Sports Communicators announced its women's track and field award winners. The men's awards will be announced on Wednesday.
Academically, Johansson holds a 3.79 GPA and is majoring in graphic design. Casadei carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom, studying management.
After last season, Johansson was announced as a second-team Academic All-American, but this is her first time being named to the first team. She's the sixth two-time Academic All-American in Nebraska women's track and field history. The junior from Hok, Sweden finished as the bronze medalist in the shot put at the NCAA Championships, throwing 59-10 ¼ (18.24m) to earn her fourth First-Team All-America honor. At the Big Ten Championships, Johansson claimed her second straight title in the outdoor shot put with a distance of 60-8 (18.49m). Adding to her athletic accolades from the season, she won the shot put at the Michael Johnson Invitational and the Jim Click Shootout, while hitting the Olympic Standard for Sweden at the Michael Johnson Invitational with a 61-9 (18.82m). Johansson is set to represent Sweden in the 2024 Olympic Games in the next month.
From Cesena, Italy, Casadei competed at the NCAA Championships in the javelin, finishing 19th with a 164-10 (50.24m). She threw for 156-2 (47.59m) at the Big Ten Championships to grab sixth in the javelin and went 173-6 (52.88m) at the Florida Relays to finish second. Casadei’s season-best was launched at the Jim Click Shootout (175-0, 53.35m).
Overall, the Nebraska men's and women's track and field programs lead the nation with 58 combined Academic All-Americans since 2002. All-time the Husker men's and women's track and field programs have combined for 72 Academic All-America awards since 1985.
Today’s selections bring the University of Nebraska's all-time Academic All-America total to 358.
