Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield met with members of the media following the team’s fall camp practice on Friday.
Satterfield spoke on the team’s upcoming second scrimmage, the wide receiver group overall, having an extra week of camp and the emphasis on ball security.
“We’ve been doing this now for 14 or 15 practices now, so the execution,” he said. “Scrimmage one, we’re doing some installs, some guys are doing some new positions and learning the system. We want to go out there tomorrow with the older groups, the first two groups and I want it to be a clean and efficient operation – great tempo and clean football, take care of the ball.”
Satterfield touched on the wide receiver group overall.
“We have a very talented group,” he said. “Playing last year made us want to pull our hair out at times playing young guys like that. We’re reaping the benefits now of guys that are just in their second year of college football to have so much experience. They play off each other, it’s a big personality room. They have fun. I think they love each other, they love being around each other. They love competing with each other. It’s just making them a better unit overall. They got a bunch of different skill sets. Big guys, small guys. Guys that may not be burners but can manipulate space in zone coverage, and we got guys that can fly. I’m really pleased with that group and how they’re trending at this point.”
Satterfield then spoke on having an extra week of camp before school starts.
“Just to be with them you know just to have them with us and I think Coach (Rhule) has done the best I’ve ever been at situational football,” Satterfield said. “I think sometimes when you run out of time at camp you’re trying to get everything in, you may not be able to spend much time on it. We just left a 20 minute end of game situational. He (Rhule) would call out situations and we’d have to execute it. I think that’s going to benefit players and coaches. We don’t know the situations. Having the extra week allows us to do things like this and not just speed through plays and check boxes. We are able to just slow down and make sure we get everything right and you get to do these things like we did today.”
Satterfield also spoke on the emphasis on not turning the ball over.
“Not to jinx us, but we’re doing a lot better job,” he said. “I mean there’s not a meeting or a day that goes by that ball security is not emphasized like we have to win the turnover margin. That’s one of our pillars. We have to win the turnover margin. We’re focused. You’ve got to be focused as a ball carrier to do that and hopefully we will improve.”
The Huskers will practice again tomorrow. Head Coach Matt Rhule will follow practice with media availability.
