Burroughs, Green Make Senior World Team, Robb Takes Third

Seven Huskers competed in the Senior World Team Trials in Omaha, Neb., this weekend, with two earning spots on the World Team. Big Red alumni Jordan Burroughs (79 kg) and James Green (70 kg) won out at the tournament, to claim their team spots to represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Tirana, Albania, October 28-31.

Peyton Robb (72 kg) placed third in greco-roman at the trials, his first tournament as a Husker alum. This summer, the four-time NCAA All-American announced he would be joining the NWTC, and began competition with the World Team Trials in Omaha. Robb had four shutout victories, starting with Justin Feldman in the Round of 16 and Gunnar Hamre in the quarterfinals. After dropping his bout with Benjamin Peak in the semifinals, Robb fought back to claim the third-place finish with two more shutouts against Charles McKune and Hunter Lewis.

Jordan Burroughs (79 kg) made his 10th World Team, sealing the deal with a sweep of his Best of 3 finals matchup against Chance Marsteller. The No. 2 seed heading into the trials, Burroughs had a bye in the first round and shutout Sam Beckett in the Round of 16. The two-time Olympian defeated Levi Haines 4-1 in the quarterfinals and Alex Dieringer 7-4 in the semifinals. In the finals, Burroughs met familiar competitor Marsteller on the mat, holding a 5-3 all-time record against the PSAC 2018-19 Division I Wrestler of the Year. Burroughs took the final in two bouts and claimed his 10th World Team spot.

James Green (70 kg) also made a return to the World Team, his 7th appearance, with his 5-0 run at the trials in the Big Red state. Seeded No. 2 before the tournament, Green had a first round bye and followed it with two dominant shutouts in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. Green took on Jordan Oliver in the semi finals and won 6-3 to move on to the finals. Up against Alec Pantaleo, Green needed only 49 seconds to grab the tech fall win in the first bout with a four-point whip over and three ankle laces. The second match in the Best of 3 final was much closer, but Green walked away victorious defeating Pantaleo 2-1.

Liam Cronin (61 kg) earned fourth at the World Team trials, going 3-2 at the tournament. Pre-seed No. 13 Cronin took his first match 4-1 over Devan Turner, but fell to Nahshon Garrett in the quarterfinals. The 2023 Husker grad won his next two matches over Michael Tortorice and Seth Gross, but couldn’t match Jax Forrest in the third-place bout.

Sixteenth-seed Dayne Morton (70 kg) did not place at the trials, going 2-2 overall. Morton won his first bout 5-1 over Isaiah Delgado and was defeated by Alec Pataleo in the Round of 16. Morton took a dominant 11-1 win over Matthew Ryan in the consolations, but was defeated by Will Lewan in the next match.

Kyle Burwick (61 kg) did not place, entering the tournament as the 16th-seed, and leaving 0-2. Burwick started against Marcus Blaze, had a second round bye, and was defeated by Jax Forrest to end his trials run.

Four-seed Eric Schultz (92 kg) had a strong start at the trials, defeating Zane Mulder 13-2. Schultz fell in his next two matches, against Michael Macchiavello, and due to injury against Connor Mirasola.

Burroughs and Green will represent the U.S. at the upcoming World Championships in Tirana, Albania, October 28-31.
