Huskers in Top 10 at Destination Orlando

Orlando, Fla. - No. 5 Nebraska went 4-1 during its first day of competition at Destination Orlando, tallying a pinfall of 4,958 and finishing the day in 6th place. 

The Cornhuskers faced Saint Anselm in their first five-game total pinfall baker match of the day and started with Anna Callan, Kayla Starr, Brenna Hartzler, Kayla Verstraete, and Jillian Martin. In game one, the Huskers bowled a 182 to top Saint Anselm’s 168. NU recorded seven strikes in game two and rolled a 222 to maintain the overall match lead, 404-317. Nebraska bowled a 198 in the third game to the Hawks’ 156, to extend the total-pin advantage to 129. The Huskers tallied five strikes in a row to start game four and topped Saint Anselm 239-163, extending the overall match lead to 841-636 going into game five. In game five, NU rolled a 210 and topped Saint Anselm, 1,051-783, to start the morning 1-0. 

Nebraska met No. 10 Duquesne in the second match of the day. The Big Red bowled a 191 in game one but were topped by the Dukes’ 211. In the second, Callan and Hartzler recorded strikes in both of their frames as the team scored a 226 and took the overall match lead, 417-370. Callan again recorded two strikes in game three, but Duquesne ended on top, 204-180. In game four, the Huskers tallied five strikes and a 169 and again fell to the Dukes, 171-169, bringing Nebraska’s total-pin advantage to 21. In the fifth, NU had seven strikes as the Huskers rolled a 209 and closed out Duquesne, 975-948, to improve to 2-0 on the day. 

In match three, the Huskers faced off against No. 1 Jacksonville State, the first time the teams had met this season. The Big Red bowled a 191 while Jacksonville State tallied seven strikes in game one, topping the Huskers, 236-191. In game two, the Gamecocks’ recorded seven straight strikes to end the match to again top NU, 235-179, to extend their total pin advantage to 101. Jacksonville State continued its streak into the third game, tallying 12 total strikes in a row, and extended the overall match lead over Nebraska, 738-595. The Cornhuskers substituted Haley Swindle for Hartzler in game four as Nebraska tallied nine strikes and bowled a 224 to top the Gamecocks, 224-221. In game five, the Huskers rolled a 156 and fell to Jacksonville State, 1,204-975, to move to 2-1 on the day. 

Nebraska moved on to face No. 23 Delaware State in match four. In the first game, the Cornhuskers scored a 189 to top Delaware State’s 163. The Big Red bowled a 160 in game two, being topped by the Hornets’ 173. In game three, NU recorded four strikes and bowled a 184, falling to Delaware State, 190-184, and bringing the overall match lead to 533-526. The Huskers tallied four strikes consecutively and six total to score a 208 to increase the total-pin advantage to 51. Nebraska substituted Desiree Buchert in for Starr in the fifth game as the team scored a 182 and topped Delaware State, 923-837, to improve to 3-1 going into match five. 

In the fifth and final match of the day one, the Huskers faced Prairie View A&M. Martin led Nebraska with two strikes as the team tallied seven total strikes and a 221 over the Panthers’ 176. The Big Red rolled a 191 and topped Prairie View, 191-169. NU recorded seven strikes and scored a 212 in game three to extend the overall match lead to 624-522. In the fourth, the Huskers bowled a 195 and topped the Panthers, 195-174 giving NU a 123-pin advantage. The Big Red tallied seven strikes and a 215 to top Prairie View A&M, 1,034-866, ending day one 4-1. 

The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. (CT) against No. 11 Stephen F. Austin in a traditional match followed by matches against Bryant, No. 3 Youngstown State, Alabama A&M, and UAB.
