Huskers Move Into Top Five at Destination Orlando

Orlando, Fla. - The No. 5 Nebraska bowling team went 4-1 in the second day of competition at Destination Orlando, bringing its overall tournament record to 8-2 with a 10,330 total pinfall, as the Huskers sit in fourth.

The Big Red began the day against No. 11 Stephen F. Austin in their first traditional match and started with Anna Callan, Karina Capron, Haley Swindle, Kayla Verstraete and Jillian Martin. The Huskers were led by Callan (276) and Capron (240) who combined for 18 total strikes. Verstraete followed with a 211 and Martin scored a 203. Swindle rounded out the lineup with a 182 as the Huskers took down the Ladyjacks, 1,112-1,093. 

Nebraska moved on to face Bryant in match two. All five ladies finished over the 200-pin mark with Capron leading with a 259. Verstraete followed closely, scoring a 234. Swindle added a 210 to the team score with Martin (205) and Callan (204) rounding out the team as the Huskers topped Bryant, 1,112-981, to move to 2-0 on the day. 

In match three, the Cornhuskers matched up with No. 3 Youngstown State in the Huskers’ fifth top 10 matchup of the season. NU tallied 36 strikes led by Callan (245) with 10. Martin led the Huskers with a 256, followed by Callan and Capron with 245. Swindle (200) and Verstraete (193) rounded out the lineup as Nebraska defeated Youngstown State, 1,139-1,114, improving to 3-0 in traditional play. 

The Huskers met Alabama A&M in the fourth match of the day. Nebraska recorded 31 strikes to keep the momentum going against the Bulldogs. Martin led at 247 with nine strikes, followed by Verstraete (218) and Capron (205). Callan (201) and Swindle (199) rounded out the Big Red lineup as Nebraska topped Alabama A&M, 1,070-883, to move to 4-0. 

NU finished the second day of competition against UAB. Nebraska tallied 25 strikes as Martin led the Huskers with a 213. Capron added a 204 with Callan shooting a 188. Verstraete (177) and Swindle (157) rounded out the lineup as UAB topped the Cornhuskers, 1,005-939, as the Big Red ended the day 4-1. 

Four Huskers currently sit in the top 25 for individual performances. Capron is fourth overall with a total pinfall of 1,153 and a 230.6 average. Martin is in ninth with a total pinfall of 1,124 and average of 224.8. Callan sits at 11th with a total pinfall of 1,114 and a 222.8 average. Verstraete is in 25th with a total pinfall of 1,033 and a 206.6 average. 

The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. (CT) against No. 12 Mount St. Mary’s in a five-game total pinfall baker match followed by two best 4-of-7 baker matches for final placements.
