The Nebraska rifle team will open the 2024-25 season against Memphis this Saturday, Oct. 5. The match will start at 8 a.m. (CT) and will be held at R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range in Memphis, Tenn. Results can be found here.
The Huskers are ranked No. 13 in the preseason College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll after finishing eighth at last year’s NCAA Championships.
The matchup with the Tigers will be the first of 10 regular-season competitions for NU, eight of which take place during the fall portion of the season. Nebraska will have two regular-season matches during the spring, along with the PRC Championships, NCAA Qualifiers and NCAA Championships.
“We’re excited to hit the road this weekend and for the season to be underway,” said Coach Richard Clark. “It’ll be a great test of the work we’ve put in the last five weeks, we’ve got two great returners and a lot of young talent ready to perform.”
Clark enters his first season as head coach for the Huskers after spending the 2023-24 season serving as assistant coach at Army West Point. A Kentucky alumni, Clark helped the Wildcats to a pair of NCAA Championships during his collegiate career and was a three-time CRCA All-American.
NU has faced Memphis 44 times and have won 33 of those matchups. In the most recent clash, NU defeated the Tigers, 4,676-4,661, at the 2021 NCAA Championships.
Nebraska returns two mainstays in the lineup from last season, including school record-holder Emma Rhode. The junior from Kempton, Pa. was a CRCA Second-Team Air Rifle All-American, and an Honorable Mention All-American in the aggregate and smallbore in 2024.
Team captain Camilla Johannessen also returns for her junior year after competing in every match for the Huskers last season in both air rifle and smallbore, including the NCAA Championships. She posted a personal best 581 in the smallbore in 2023-24.
Nebraska adds four freshmen for the 2024-25 season in Grace Corbett, Riley Dunn, Maddy Moyer, and Alivia Perkins.
The freshmen come to NU with accolades of their own. Corbett placed second overall in the Potomac High School Rifle League 2024 Regional Championship and placed first in the U21 Virginia Junior Olympics Air Qualifier.
Dunn was the 2024 Pennsylvania Interscholastic High School Rifle State Champion in the three-position smallbore. During the 2022-2023 school year, Dunn was the WPIAL Pennsylvania individual championship gold medal winner for rifle, making her the third student-athlete to win multiple WPIAL individual rifle titles. She is a three-time Junior Olympic athlete for both smallbore and air rifle, and competed at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in April of 2023.
Moyer made the Georgia All-State team for two years and had the highest season average in the region and second-highest average in the state. At the 2023 Dixie Doubles Tournament, she placed third in the junior division in air rifle and 14th overall.
Perkins was a 2024 Indiana Junior Olympics Air Rifle and Smallbore silver medalist. She was also a 2024 Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association 3P Air and Smallbore gold medalist and Air Rifle silver medalist. In 2023, Perkins was the Women’s U18 Junior Olympic Smallbore gold medalist, and won gold in the smallbore and bronze in the air rifle at the Indiana Junior Olympics.
Following the match with Memphis, the Huskers will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face off against UTEP and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 12.
