Huskers Down No. 10 Memphis in Season Opener

The No. 13 Nebraska rifle team defeated the No. 10 Memphis, 4709-4687, in its season opener on Saturday.

NU tied the third-highest team smallbore score in team history with a mark of 2,345, while junior Emma Rhode shot a personal-best 593 in the event to tie the second-highest score in school history. 

The Huskers took three of the top five spots overall. Rhode placed first with an aggregate score of 1187. She was followed by freshmen Alivia Perkins (third, 1175) and Maddy Moyer (fifth, 1172). 

“The girls came to compete today and worked hard for every point,” Clark said. “Everyone, regardless of the score, saw the progress from practice the last two weeks translate to the match, which I think is a really good sign for what is to come in the next few weeks. Overall, it was a good first showing for the team. There are certainly some areas we are going to address this week in practice, but there were a lot of positives that we get to carry with us into next weekend while we are at Air Force.”

In the air rifle, Nebraska took two of the top five spots. Rhode led the way with a second-place score of 594. Grace Corbett was fifth with a score of 592, while Camilla Johannessen (590), Perkins (588), Moyer (587), and Riley Dunn (574) finished out the lineup.  

Rhode also led the team in the smallbore, earning a first-place finish with a 593. Perkins (587) and Moyer (585) were second and third, respectively, to complete the sweep. Dunn (sixth, 580), Johannessen (574, 11th) and Corbett (565, 15th) rounded out the scoring for the Huskers. 

The Big Red will head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on UTEP and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 12. The match is slated to start at 9:30 a.m.
