Howell, N.J. - The fifth-ranked Nebraska bowling team went 5-0 in its first day of competition at the Garden State Classic, tallying a pinfall of 5,231 and finishing the day in second place.
The Big Red matched up against Felician in its first five-game total pinfall baker match of the day and started with Haley Swindle, Karina Capron, Brenna Hartzler, Anna Callan and Jillian Martin. Martin recorded four total strikes in game one but Felician topped the Huskers 199-192. In the second, NU tallied five consecutive strikes and bowled a clean game to top the Golden Falcons, 246-204, and to take the overall match lead, 438-403. In the third game, the Huskers recorded six strikes and scored a 221 to push their total-pin advantage to 101. The Cornhuskers started game four with five-straight strikes and recorded nine total as NU topped Felician, 225-159, as the Huskers maintained the overall match lead, 884-717 going into the fifth. The Big Red subbed in Kayla Starr for Capron in the second position as the team tallied 10 strikes and scored a 247, taking down the Golden Falcons, 1,131-886.
In match two, NU played Holy Family. The Cornhuskers scored five-straight strikes to start game one and bowled a 210 over the Tiger’s 134. Nebraska recorded six total strikes in game two and rolled a 220 to top Holy Family, 220-135. The Huskers bowled a 192 in game three, maintaining the overall match lead, 622-440. In the fourth, the Big Red rolled a 184 over the Tiger’s 125, increasing the Husker’s pin advantage in the match to 241. NU rolled a 165 in game five as the Cornhuskers took down Holy Family, 971-756, to move to 2-0 on day one.
The Huskers moved on to face Bryant in match three. Nebraska bowled a clean game one and topped Bryant 207-159. In game two, Starr and Callan recorded strikes in both of their frames as NU tallied eight strikes and bowled a 217 over the Bulldogs’ 179. The Big Red bowled another clean game in the third as the team scored a 213 and topped Bryant, 213-186, to increase their overall match lead to 637-524. In game four, the Cornhuskers bowled a 219 over the Bulldogs’ 174, to increase the total pin advantage to 158. In the fifth game, Verstraete subbed in for Hartzler in the third position as the Huskers bowled a clean game and recorded five strikes to end the game led by Martin who recorded four. The Cornhuskers took down Bryant, 1,101-888, improving to 3-0 on day one.
In the fourth, the Cornhuskers faced off against Adelphi. Starr and Callan both recorded two strikes each in the first game as Nebraska bowled a 200 to top Adelphi, 200-163. NU bowled a clean game two as the team recorded seven strikes led by Martin with seven as Nebraska topped the Panthers, 227-161. In game three, the Big Red scored a 195 but the Panthers answered with a clean game and a 205, bringing the Huskers’ overall match lead to 622-529. In the fourth, NU tallied seven strikes and rolled a 212 over Adelphi’s 172, increasing Nebraska’s total-pin advantage to 133. In the fifth, the Big Red scored a 183 to finish off Adelphi, 1,017-848.
In the fifth and final match of the day, Nebraska faced Coppin State. In the first, the Cornhuskers bowled an 181 and topped the Eagles, 181-147. In game two, Coppin State recorded five strikes in a row and eight total to top the Huskers, 245-196, to take a 392-377 overall match lead. The Huskers bowled a clean game three and recorded seven strikes led by Martin with four as NU topped the Eagles, 224-190, and regained the overall match lead, 601-582. NU bowled another clean game in the third as the team tallied eight total strikes including five-straight to end the game. Martin recorded her eighth strike in a row to lead the Huskers over Coppin State, 223-128, to push the total-pin advantage to 114. In game five, Martin recorded her 10th straight strike of the match as the Huskers scored a 187 and closed out Coppin State, 1,011-841, to go a perfect 5-0 on the first day of competition.
The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 7:55 a.m. (CT) against No. 23 Delaware State in a traditional match followed by matches against No. 6 North Carolina A&T, Monmouth, No, 12 Mount St. Mary’s and No. 25 Niagara.
