Huskers Start with Splash at Hawkeye Invite

Beatrix Tanko clocked the fastest relay split in Husker history to highlight the Nebraska swimming and diving team's first day at the Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center in Iowa City on Thursday.  

With several strong performances from the Huskers, including a sweep of the top two spots in the 500 freestyle by Gena Jorgenson and Caterina Bisiacchi, Nebraska sits in first place in the team competition with 417 points.  

Maisie Gilford, JoJo Randby, Anna Vlachou and Tanko got the day started for the Huskers by tying for third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.71). Tanko, a sophomore from Budapest, Hungary, anchored the relay and swam the fastest 50 free split in Nebraska history (21.92). 

Jorgenson started the individual finals off with a bang by clocking an NCAA B cut in the 500 freestyle (4:41.89) to win the A final. Bisiacchi (4:47.90) added a runner-up finish, while freshman Riley Miklos (4:50.78) contributed a seventh-place performance to contribute big team points for the Big Red. 

Maia Hall and Sydney McCracken both had strong finishes in the 200 IM. Hall, a senior captain, touched the wall fifth, posting a time of 2:00.72, while McCracken added an eighth-place finish (2:02.53).  

In the 50 freestyle, Tanko and Gilford performed well for the Huskers in the A final. Tanko took fourth in a time of 22.72, while Gilford added a season-best time of 22.90 to finish seventh.  

Abby Baxter shined for the Big Red in the diving well. The sophomore from Coppell, Texas scored 299.40 points to finish fourth in the A final on the one meter board. Junior captain Kelsey Clairmont took 10th with a score of 275.55. 

The Huskers finished the day strong with a third-place finish in the 400-medley relay. Jorgenson, Randby, Tanko and Gilford worked together to finish with a time of 3:38.88. 

The action continues Friday at 10 a.m. (CT) for prelims, finals will follow at 5 p.m. (CT).
