NU Fourth at MOTIV Ladyjack Classic

Kenosha Wis. - The No. 5 Nebraska bowling team went a perfect 5-0 during its first day of competition at the MOTIV Ladyjack Classic, tallying a pinfall of 5,125 and finishing the day in fourth. 

The Huskers faced Wichita State in their first five-game total pinfall baker match of the day and started with Anna Callan, Karina Capron, Kayla Verstraete, Kayla Starr and Jillian Martin. The Big Red rolled a 193 in game one to top the Shockers, 193-176. In game two, the Huskers started with three strikes in a row led by Verstraete and again topped Wichita State, 210-176. The Cornhuskers recorded eight strikes in a row in game three and bowled a 266 over the Shocker’s 202, to extend the total-pin advantage to 115. In the fourth game, NU bowled a 210 and again topped Wichita State, 210-196. In the fifth game, Nebraska rolled a 214 to finish off Wichita State, 1,093-912, to start the morning 1-0. 

In match two, the Cornhuskers matched up with Marian. Marian recorded six strikes in game one as they edged the Huskers, 176-175. In game two, Martin tallied two strikes in the 10th frame to top the Sabres’ 167-148. NU was again led by Martin who recorded three strikes in the 10th but Marian topped the Huskers 199-194, and cut Nebraska’s total-pin advantage to just 13. The Big Red bowled a 193 in game four over Marian’s 170, bringing the overall match lead to 729-693. In the fifth, Nebraska recorded five strikes to start the game led by Martin’s three as the Cornhuskers rolled a 220 and took down Marian, 949-864, to move to 2-0. 

Nebraska faced Carthage in the third match of the day. The Huskers took down Carthage 224-165 in game one, led by Verstraete and Martin with two strikes each. Callan tallied strikes in both of her frames in game two as NU bowled a 194 to top Carthage’s 175. In the third, Nebraska recorded eight strikes and a 254 to the Firebirds’ 188, as the Cornhuskers extended their overall match lead to 672-528. Martin again recorded three strikes in the 10th as the team rolled a 203 to increase the overall-pin advantage to 180. The Big Red tallied a 191 and topped Carthage, 191-158, and defeated the Redbirds, 1,066-853. 

The Big Red moved on to face Oklahoma Christian in match four. The Huskers bowled a 192 in game one and topped the Eagles, 192-180. In game two, NU tallied six total strikes as they topped Oklahoma Christian, 210-197. In the third, the Eagles recorded six strikes and bowled a 214 and topped Nebraska, 214-194, bringing the Husker’s total-pin advantage to just 5. The Huskers were topped again in game four as Oklahoma Christian took the overall match lead, 798-781. The Cornhuskers bowled a clean game five, as the team recorded four-straight strikes led by Verstraete’s two as NU bowled a 229 to defeat the Eagles, 1,010-947. 

In the final match of the day, the Cornhuskers faced off against No. 15 Newman. The Big Red recorded six strikes in the first and topped Newman, 210-126. In the second game, Nebraska recorded six total strikes and scored a 212 to the Jets’ 204, and brought the overall match lead to 422-330. In game three, the Huskers were led by freshmen Capron and Starr who each recorded strikes in their respective frames, as NU topped Newman, 223-186. NU rolled a 163 in game four and fell to Newman, 207-163, as the total-pin advantage was brought to 85. In the final game, Martin led the team with three strikes out of the team’s seven, as the Cornhuskers scored a 199 to defeat the Jets, 1,007-894, to finish day one 5-0. 

The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 9:25 a.m. (CT) against No. 2 Arkansas State in a traditional match followed by matches against No. 1 Jacksonville State, No. 19 Valparaiso, No. 7 Louisiana Tech and No. 4 Vanderbilt.
