Huskers Take on ASU, ITA Kickoff Weekend

The Nebraska men’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) is headed to Lexington, Ky., for the ITA Kickoff Weekend featuring #20 Arizona State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12), #12 Kentucky (2-1, 0-0 SEC) and Santa Clara (1-1, 0-0 WCC). After two 7-0 wins in their home opener doubleheader, the Huskers will take on #20 ASU on Friday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. CT.

On Saturday, with a win, the Big Red will play in the championship match at 3 p.m. CT. With a loss, NU will play in the consolation match at 11 a.m. CT. Live streams for all matches will be available and linked on huskers.com. 

With four teams per site, a total of 56 teams comprise the 2025 ITA Kickoff Weekend draw. The weekend’s champion will clinch a spot in the 2025 ITA Indoor National Championships that will take place in Dallas and Waco, Texas in February.

#20 Arizona State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12)
History: ASU leads, 2-1
The Sun Devils enter the ITA Kickoff Weekend as the two seed, with a national ranking of #20, and their only loss of the season being to #1 Texas, winning only the doubles point. Senior All-American Murphy Cassone of ASU is currently No. 306 in the ATP rankings after winning the 2024 Calgary Challenger. The Sun Devils have yet to lose a doubles point this season, and have a 3-0 duo in Phillips/Povey. Arizona State was 18-10 in the 2023-24 season.

#12 Kentucky (2-1, 0-0 SEC)
History: 0-0
Kentucky hosts its third consecutive ITA Kickoff Weekend, this time, entering also as the highest ranked team and seed. The Wildcats are 2-1 so far on the season, after going 27-3 in the 2023-24 season. Their one loss of the 2024-25 was dealt by #23 Michigan State, 5-2. Kentucky’s squad features All-SEC athletes Jaden Weekes and Charlelie Cosnet, as well as the top newcomer in the nation according to ITA, Antoine Ghibaudo.

Santa Clara (1-1, 0-0 WCC)
History: NU leads, 2-0
The Broncos enter the weekend with a split record, after defeating Sacramento State but being swept by Oregon. Santa Clara was picked to finish fourth in the 2025 West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted by the league’s nine head coaches. Santa Clara reached as high as No. 53 and went 19-8 in the 2023-24 season, the most team wins since 2012.
