Arlington, Texas - The No. 3 Nebraska bowling team went 3-2 in their second day of competition at the Prairie View A&M Invite, bringing its overall tournament record to 5-5 with a 10,439 total pinfall, as NU moved up to sixth place.
The Huskers started the day off against No. 2 Jacksonville State in its first traditional match and started with Desiree Buchert, Haley Swindle, Kayla Starr, Anna Callan and Jillian Martin. Despite losing the strike margin, NU put up 30 strikes, including eight in a row as Buchert (248) and Martin (237) led the way for Nebraska, combining for 15 strikes together. Starr followed with a 209 and Swindle added a 192 to the team score. Callan rounded out the lineup with a 184 as the Cornhuskers took down the Gamecocks for the third time in a row, 1,070-1,007, starting the morning 1-0.
NU matched up with No. 8 Sam Houston in match two. Martin rolled a 228, leading the Big Red. Callan (206) and Buchert (201) also finished over the 200 mark on the game. Swindle added a 183 and Starr rolled a 182 as Nebraska was topped by the Bearkats, 1,043-1,000, behind Sam Houston’s 32 strikes.
The Cornhuskers moved on to face tournament host, Prairie View A&M. Each Husker tallied at least six strikes with Starr (265) leading the way with 10. Martin and Callan each added a 237 to the team’s score. Swindle rolled a 226 and Buchert added a 185 as the Big Red outstruck the Panthers 39-21 and defeated Prairie View A&M, 1,150-934.
In match four, Nebraska met No. 1 Vanderbilt. Starr (238) and Buchert (222) were the leaders for the Huskers. Callan rolled a 217 and Swindle bowled a 212. Martin added a 187 to the score, but Vanderbilt topped the Big Red, 1,087-1,076, behind 29 strikes including nine consecutive, as NU moved to 2-2 on the day.
In the final match of day two, the Big Red took on Texas Southern. Swindle led the team with seven strikes and a 224, followed closely by a 218 from Buchert. Martin (207) and Starr (204) both met the 200 threshold, and Callan added a 179 as the Huskers topped Texas Southern, 1,032-858, after recording 12 more strikes than the Tigers, finishing the day 3-2.
Three Huskers currently sit in the top 25 for individual performances. Starr is 16th overall with a total pinfall of 1,098 and a 219.6 average. Martin is in 17th with a total pinfall of 1,096 and average of 219.2. Buchert sits at 22nd with a total pinfall of 1,074 and a 214.8 average.
The Huskers return to the lanes tomorrow morning at 8:25 a.m. (CT) against No. 12 Louisiana Tech in an additional traditional match followed by two additional best 4-of-7 baker matches for final placements.
