Behind six bonus-point bouts, the Nebraska wrestling team took down Michigan State, 38-3, in a dominant road dual on Sunday. The 35-point victory margin is a season-best, and improved the Huskers to 8-2, 3-1 Big Ten. Brock Hardy claimed his 75th career win, and NU dominated its first conference road tests, going 2-0 on the weekend.
Starting at 125, #7 Caleb Smith used two takedowns, a reversal and escape to put three on the board for the Big Red. The 11-6 decision over Weiand to claim his 98th career win.
With the 3-0 lead No. 14 Jacob Van Dee faced Andy Hampton at 133. Van Dee moved quickly, taking the early 12-2 lead after the first period. He then tallied three takedowns in the second period to secure his second-straight tech. fall, 21-5.
At 141, #6 Brock Hardy wrestled Michigan State’s Jaden Crumpler. Hardy secured a takedown and four-point nearfall before scoring seven more points in the second period for the 18-1 tech. fall. Behind three-straight bout victories, #3 Ridge Lovett met Clayton Jones III at 149. Lovett got the early takedown before continuing the momentum and earning the second-period pin, his fourth of the year.
Scott Robertson got the call to wrestle at 157 against Mason Stewart. Robertson battled Stewart to a 10-10 tie after three periods, before Stewart earned the takedown in sudden victory and the win, 13-10. At 165, Christopher Minto wrestled Jay Nivison with the 19-3 team lead. Minto held the advantage, scoring a takedown and four nearfall points to secure the 8-1 decision.
#15 Lenny Pinto then met Caesar Garza at 174. Pinto wasted no time, taking the early lead 10-2 lead after two periods en route to the 11-4 decision. At 197, #22 Silas Allred earned the third Big Red tech. fall of the day, as he topped Michigan State’s Luke Daly. Allred secured his second-straight tech. fall and 11th bonus point victory this season.
At 197, Michigan State’s lone ranked wrestler #25 Remy Cotton took the mat against #22 Camden McDanel. The Husker freshman powered through full time to claim his second win against a ranked opponent, and eighth major decision, 15-6.
In the last match of the day, #21 Harley Andrews faced Max Vanadia at heavyweight. After a scoreless first period, Andrews earned an escape, takedown and four nearfall points for the 9-1 major decision.
The Huskers finished the day on top, 38-3, improving to 8-2, 3-1 Big Ten. The Spartans fell to 3-5, 0-4 Big Ten.
