Big Red to Take On No. 25 Baylor, Denver in Texas

With a 4-0 start to their season, the Huskers will travel to Waco, Texas, this weekend to take on No. 25 Baylor (2-1) and Denver (1-2). The Nebraska women’s tennis team will face its first ranked opponent of the season on Friday, Jan. 31 at noon CT. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 1, NU and the Pioneers will begin matches at 10 a.m. CT.

The Huskers have four duals under their belt, notching wins over UC Riverside, Wichita State and Washington State. Senior Ana Zamburek is off to a 3-0 start in the No. 1 singles slot, highlighted by her straight set win over No. 62 Xin Tong Wang. On the doubles side, sophomore Maria Taranova is on a five-win streak across her matches partnered with Reya Lee Coe, Lucy Loy and Yuzu Miyoshi.

The Huskers are coming off the fall individual season in which the team tallied 34 singles wins. Sophomore Maria Taranova led the Big Red in fall singles wins with seven, and had a stellar freshman season in which she earned a 23-8 record, the most wins by a freshman since 2010.

No. 25 Baylor (2-1, 0-0 Big 12)
History: Baylor leads, 18-1
The Bears are off to a 2-1 spring season start, their loss being to No. 12 Texas, 4-3. Baylor’s wins are against Harvard and BYU. In the fall, Bears duo No. 13 Kostenko/Tiglea competed in the NCAA Doubles Championships, but fell in the first round. Baylor also has two singles players in the rankings, No. 76 Na Dong, who is 3-0 in her college-dual match career, and No. 118 Wenfei Yu. BU went 17-13 in duals last season. 

Denver (1-2, 0-0 Summit)
History: NU leads, 3-0
The Denver Pioneers are 1-2 on the 2024-25 spring season, with losses to Colorado and TCU. In the 4-1 loss to the Horned Frogs, DU’s No. 47 Andrea Beltran/Marley Lambert defeated then-No. 12 doubles duo Otway/Pascual. Also in the ITA preseason rankings are No. 110 Martinez De Velasco/Wikiander and No. 93 Andrea Beltran. The neutral site match will be the first meeting between the Huskers and Pioneers in nearly a decade. Denver went 17-7 last spring season.
