Huskers Drop Dual at No. 10 UNI

The No. 4 Nebraska wrestling team (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) lost its first dual of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 10 Northern Iowa (4-0, 2-0 Big 12), 24-9. With seven ranked matchups, and only one bonus point bout, the road dual was a close scramble on the mat.

The Big Red claimed its nine team points on wins from #20 Jacob Van Dee, #5 Ridge Lovett and #17 Lenny Pinto. Three Huskers lost their perfect records, and head coach Mark Manning remains on the hunt for his 300th dual win at Nebraska as the team heads into conference competition.

The top-10 matchup started at 125, with #5 Caleb Smith and Trever Anderson taking the mat. The pair were scoreless through the first period, but Anderson came out with the 5-2 decision using a takedown, escape and ride time. Anderson’s win put the Panthers on the board, and evened the series between Smith and Anderson to one win each.

Another familiar pair at 133, #20 Jacob Van Dee and Julian Farber followed the upset. Van Dee used a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second, and secured the riding time point in the third to take the 5-0 decision victory. At 141, #5 Brock Hardy took on #8 Cael Happel and started with a takedown. After a second period escape, Happel fired back with a takedown and four nearfall points to eventually claim a 7-5 decision and the 6-3 Panther lead.

#5 Ridge Lovett then met #17 Colin Realbuto on the mat at 149, and started with two takedowns from the Husker. Lovett extended his lead with two nearfall points and secured the ride time point in the second period. Realbuto fought to come back in the third period, with three nearfall points and two takedowns, but Lovett took the bout 12-9, tying the team scores at six.

At 157, #3 Antrell Taylor faced #5 Ryder Downey, just a month after the pair had a tight bout in the final round of the Cliff Keen Invite. Taylor and Downey kept it even with escapes and minimal ride time through three periods, which took the pair to overtime. In the last 30 seconds of SV-1, Downey took control and claimed a takedown to grab the 5-2 win.

In his dual debut, Christopher Minto and UNI’s #21 Jack Thomsen had a tight bout at 165. With one escape each through three periods, the pair went into overtime. Thomsen came out with a takedown to win in SV-1, 4-1, and extend the Panther’s lead to six.

At 174, there was another Cliff Keen rematch, this time between #17 Lenny Pinto and #16 Jared Simma. Simma shut out Pinto through two periods, but the Husker came back with two takedowns to take a 6-5 decision win, putting the team score at Nebraska 9, Northern Iowa 12.

In the third top-10 bout of the dual, #5 Silas Allred and #2 Parker Keckeisen met on the mat at 184. After a takedown from Keckeisen and an escape from Allred, the Panther got a fall in 3:38, claiming the first bonus point win of the dual, notching six team points for UNI. At 197, #22 Camden McDanel and #15 Wyatt Voelker traded takedowns and escapes, but the Panther claimed riding time and a 6-4 decision, sealing the UNI win.

The dual closed with the heavyweight bout between #23 Harley Andrews and #16 Lance Runyon. Andrews had an early 5-2 lead in the first period, but Runyon bounced back with a reversal and four nearfall points, using dominant riding time for a 11-6 decision. On the season, the Panthers took their fourth dual win, 24-6, and handed the Big Red its first loss. UNI improved to 30-19-1 against NU all-time.
