Huskers Fall to UTEP on Saturday

The No. 10 Nebraska rifle team was defeated by No. 16 UTEP by a score of 4,694-4,689 on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.
 
The Huskers fell to 11-6 on the season (3-3 PRC). Emma Rhode led NU with a 1,182 aggregate score and first-place overall finish, her ninth of the season. Alivia Perkins was third with a 1,175, while Maddy Moyer finished fifth (1,170). 
 
“It’s always hard to come off of a program record and perform at that same level,” said head coach Richard Clark. “We had a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes in smallbore today and allowed the uncontrollable aspects of the match to dictate the way we shot. I am happy with the way the girls bounced back in the air rifle. It was really great to see Grace break back into the 590s today with a great performance, and Emma continue with her strong performances with another 597. Overall, today was not the day we wanted, but serves as a good reminder of the attention we need to give to the little things.”
 
NU posted a 2,314 team score in the smallbore, led by Rhode, who placed second with a 585. Perkins (581) and Moyer (580) followed in fourth and seventh,  respectively. Johannessen scored a 568 (10th) and Corbett rounded out the lineup with a 559 (11th). 
 
Rhode earned a first-place finish in the air rifle with a 597 to help lead the Huskers to a 2,375. She has not shot below a 590 in the event this season. Corbett finished second with a 594 and Perkins was third, also with a 594. The tiebreaker was determined by the number of 10-point shots by each athlete. Moyer (fifth, 590) and Johannessen (585, 11th) finished out the lineup for the Big Red. 
 
The Huskers will kick off the postseason with the PRC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9 at The X-Count in Fort Wayne, Ind. A time for the championships is yet to be determined.
