Jurgens Highlights Husker Super Bowl Champs

Three former Huskers are Super Bowl Champions following the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday. Center Cam Jurgens, offensive lineman Nick Gates and linebacker Ochaun Mathis were all members of the Eagles throughout the season. This year’s Super Bowl marks the second time in five years that Nebraska has had three players on the championship winning team after three Husker defenders picked up Super Bowl rings for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2020 campaign.

Jurgens highlights the group as the starting center for the offensive line generally regarded as the best in the National Football League.  In the Super Bowl, Jurgens anchored an Eagles offense that held the ball for nearly 37 minutes and gained 345 yards in the 40-22 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles’ 40 points are the most in a Super Bowl since Philadelphia scored 41 points in its Super Bowl LII victory following the 2017 season.

The Super Bowl victory capped a remarkable first season as a starter for Jurgens. The Beatrice, Neb., native earned a Pro Bowl invitation after helping the Eagles rank second in the NFL in rushing offense during the regular season. Jurgens was a mainstay as the Huskers’ center during his Nebraska career. After beginning his career at tight end, Jurgens moved to center and started 31 of 32 games for Nebraska from the 2019 to 2021 seasons. In his final season in 2021, Jurgens earned All-Big Ten honors before being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Eagles.

Gates and Mathis join Jurgens in capturing their first Super Bowl rings with the Eagles. A seven-year NFL veteran, Gates was in his first season with the Eagles in 2024. He played in nine games on the offensive line for the Eagles this season, including one start, and was on injured reserve for the Super Bowl victory. Gates finished his Nebraska career in 2017 and has been a fixture in the NFC East in his NFL career, spending time with the New York Giants, Washington and now the Eagles.

Mathis, who spent one season at Nebraska in 2022, joined the Eagles during the 2024 season. He appeared in three games while splitting time between the practice squad and the active roster.
