Murray Earns Top 10 Finish in Puerto Rico

Hamish Murray fired a 54-hole score of 218 (-4) to tie for seventh individually while leading the Nebraska men's golf team to a tie for seventh in a 14-team field at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Feb. 9-11.

Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, put up the best second-round score of the tournament with a 67 (-5) on Monday, before closing with an even-par 72 Tuesday on the 7,122-yard layout of the Flamboyan Course at Palmas Del Mar Country Club. Murray's second round included an eagle on the par-5, 538-yard third hole and six birdies to overcome a pair of bogeys and one double-bogey in the round.

Evan McDermott added a strong showing of his own with a tie for 15th at 214 (-2) that included back-to-back rounds of 70 (-2) on Monday and Tuesday. 

Freshman Brodie Cunningham got off to a solid start with an opening-round 71 (-1) on Sunday, before managing rounds of 74 and 73 to finish in a tie for 32nd at 218 (+2) in the 87-player field. His final round total also included an eagle on No. 3.

Graduate student Reed Malleck completed Nebraska's top four golfers in the lineup with his tie for 53rd at 223 (+7), including a final-round 71 on Tuesday.

Sophomore Rudy Sautron opened the tournament with a 76 (+4) on Sunday but did not compete in the second round. He came back with a 73 (+1) to close the tournament on Tuesday.

Erich Fortlage captured individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 206 (-10) to lead Arkansas to the team title. Kennesaw State's Claes Borregaard finished one shot back in second place at 207 (-9), while TCU's Joe Pagdin took third at 208 (-8).

The Horned Frogs finished second in the team stands at 845 (-19), two shots back of the Razorbacks at 843 (-21). Michigan took third at 853 (-11), while Kennesaw State finished fourth at 854 (-10). Indiana closed in fifth at 860 (-4), while the hosts from UNC Greensboro claimed sixth at 863 (-1), three shots ahead of Nebraska's tie for seventh with North Texas at 866 (+2).

Nebraska will take nearly a month off from competition before returning to action at the Johnnie-O in St. Simons Island, Ga., March 17-18.
