Big Red Complete 2-0 Weekend, Defeat Tulsa 6-1

Fresh off a 4-3 win at Ole Miss, the Nebraska men’s tennis team notched another dual win on the road, defeating Tulsa (6-6) 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Big Red improved to 6-3 with the victory, staying in the win column, and matching last season’s nine-dual opening record. Four Huskers took straight-set wins en route to the victory, which ended a three-match win streak for the Golden Hurricane.

Starting with doubles in Tulsa, the Huskers pushed ahead with duo Anton Shepp and Lars Johann claiming the 7-5 win on Court One over Tulsa’s Alex Okonkwo and Timothy Carlsson Seger. Leo Linquet and Joan Torres Espinosa met Calum Jestin and Will Pellegrini on Court Three, but Tulsa came out on top, 6-3. Big Red duo Calvin Mueller and Nikolay Sysoev clinched the doubles point on Court Two with the 6-4 victory, topping Gus Tettamble and Luis Felipe Miguel.

With the 1-0 overall lead, singles play started. Lars Johann got the first singles win for the Huskers, defeating Nikola Puntaric on Court Four, 6-1, 6-4. Tulsa got a point on the board as Court Two was the second match to finish, with Shepp battling but falling to Luis Miguel 6-2, 7-5. On Court Five, Roni Hietaranta defeated Connor Doig in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. In a close battle, Colson Wells took down Reiya Komagata, 7-5, 6-4, to clinch the match for NU.

Court One finished next, Mueller coming out on top in a tight two-setter. Using two tiebreaks, the NU senior defeated Alex Okonkwo, 7-6(3), 7-6(9), pushing the team score to Nebraska 5, Tulsa 1. Sysoev claimed one more singles win for the Big Red, using three sets at No. 3 singles to best Timothy Carlsson Seger, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

With the victory, the Big Red ended Tulsa’s five-match win streak against Nebraska, besting the Golden Hurricane for the first time since 1990. NU won its seventh doubles point of the season, and redshirt freshman Colson Wells claimed his 14th singles win, having clinched three duals this spring from Court Six.
