The Nebraska swimming and diving team prepares for the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, Feb. 19-22.
The 14 Big Ten women's swimming and diving teams open championship action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. (CT) with the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay.
Action continues on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. (CT) with preliminary swims before finals at 4 p.m. (CT). The competition continues on Friday and Saturday with similar schedules and live video will be available all four days to B1G+ subscribers. Live results will also be available through Huskers.com.
Husker Gena Jorgenson hunts a Big Ten Championship in the distance freestyle events. The junior from Aberdeen, S.D., has captured 24 titles this season while swimming career bests in six events and notching three NCAA B cuts. Jorgenson, who was a first-team All-American in the 1,650 freestyle a year ago, secured two of her career bests in the 200 back (1:57.38) and the 400 IM (4:13.78) at the Hawkeye Invitational. Jorgenson owns a pair of top-six finishes in the 1,650 free at the past two conference championships.
Maia Hall, a senior from Whitby, England, has helped the Huskers to triumphant finishes this season. A leader in Nebraska's strong breaststroke group, Hall raced to a school-record 59.97 in the 100 breast earlier this season at the Hawkeye Invitational, while adding strong performances in the 200 breast, including a season-best 2:11.58 for NCAA B cut at the Hawkeye Invite. Hall swam to a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes last season at the Big Ten Championships.
Fellow senior breaststroker JoJo Randby also owns NCAA B cuts this season in the 100 and 200. The senior from Omaha, Neb., logged a personal best in the 200 breaststroke in late November at the Hawkeye Invitational with an impressive time of 2:13.20. She also recorded a season-best 100 breaststroke (1:00.54). Randby finished seventh in the 100 breast at the 2023 Big Ten Championships.
Sophomore Beatrix Tanko has been a dynamic freestyle and butterfly swimmer for the Big Red this year. She has achieved numerous top finishes in the 100 fly and 100 free events. She also secured an NCAA B cut in the 50 freestyle at the Hawkeye Invitational earlier this season.
The newest Husker Virgina Consiglio, who joined the team for the spring semester, has made a strong first impression and could be a factor at the Big Ten meet. The young Italian owns NU's top time in the 100 backstroke (54.09) and holds the third-fastest 200 backstroke (2:00.99) time.
In the diving well, Abby Baxter has been a leader for the Huskers. Baxter owns NU's best dives of the season in the one and three-meter events. Kelsey Clairmont could also be a factor for the Huskers on the platform.
Nebraska's relays have been among the best in school history this year and could be ready to rewrite the record books. The 400 medley relay team of Jorgenson, Randby, Tanko and junior Maisie Gilford are poised for a record-setting effort, as is the Husker 200 freestyle relay of Gilford, Randby, Anna Vlachou and Tanko. The Husker 400 freestyle relay of Gilford, Giulia Marchi, Randby and Tanko are also within striking distance of Nebraska's top time.
Nebraska will go head-to-head with some of the nation's best teams in Columbus, including six Big Ten teams currently ranked in CSCAA Top 25 led by No. 7 Indiana and No. 10 Michigan.
