Lockport, Ill. - The third-ranked Nebraska bowling team will travel this week to Lockport, Illinois, competing at the Storm Flyer Classic, hosted by Lewis.
The Huskers come off a fifth-place finish in their previous appearance at the Prairie View A&M Invite. The team finished 8-5 in their second tournament of the spring session with notable wins over No. 14 Duquesne, No. 2 Jacksonville State, No. 12 Louisiana Tech, No. 9 Maryville and two wins over No. 4 Youngstown State. As of February 2, Nebraska sits on top of the NTCA RPI rankings with 63 wins and 15 losses on the season.
Three NU bowlers currently sit in the top 50 in the NTCA Player Composite Performance Index (PCPI), which is the primary factor in awarding all-american honors at the end of the season. Kayla Verstraete is in 34th and Anna Callan is in eight in the PCPI. Jillian Martin leads the nation in the PCPI and leads all bowlers in traditional and baker scoring average, and strike percentage at 61.5%. Karina Capron (56.7%) is sixth in strike percentage and Callan (53.7%) sits in 15th.
Last season at the Storm Flyer Classic, the Big Red finished second out of a 20 team field, dropping the championship to Sam Houston. The teams joining the Cornhuskers include nine programs in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 10: No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 2 Jacksonville State, No. 4 Youngstown State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 7 Wichita State, No. 8 Sam Houston, No. 9 Maryville and No. 10 North Carolina A&T. No. 13 McKendree, No. 15 Tulane and No. 16 Wisconsin-Whitewater are the three other teams that are currently ranked in the NTCA Top 25. Augustana, Aurora, Carroll, Elmhurst, Indianapolis, Lewis, Wright State, Marian, Oklahoma Christian, Quincy and Valaparaiso round out the remaining teams competing.
The first ball will be thrown Friday morning at 10:35 a.m. (CT) with five sets of five-game baker matches. The tournament continues with five traditional matches Saturday morning, beginning at 9:25 a.m. (CT). Competition will continue Sunday morning at 8:10 a.m. (CT) with an additional traditional match. The combined results from Friday, Saturday, and the additional traditional match will determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket-play championship tournament. Each team will play two best-of-seven baker matches to determind final placements.
