Huskers Fall 4-2 to Baylor

Lars Johann and Calvin Mueller took ranked wins in front of a record crowd at the Dillon Tennis Center, but the Nebraska men’s tennis team fell 4-2 to Baylor on Friday.

Starting with doubles, Anton Shepp and Lars Johann took on the No. 9 duo of Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Marko Miladniovic on Court One. Shepp and Johann took an early lead and were able to secure the top-10 victory. On Courts Two and Three, Nikolay Sysoev and Calvin Mueller faced Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig, and Leo Linquet and Joan Torres Espinosa met Zsombor Velcz and Alexandru Chirita. Both Husker doubles fell 6-3, and Baylor was awarded the doubles point. 

After a brief intermission, action resumed with the singles matches. On Court Six, Colson Wells fell to Miladinovic, 6-2, 6-1. Picking up a point for the Huskers was Johann, who defeated No. 64 Velcz in straight sets (7-5, 6-1). 

Roni Hiteranta met Chirita on Court Five, where Chirita came away with the 6-3, 6-4 win for the Bears. Bouncing back for the Huskers on Court One was Mueller, who battled No. 37 Badenhorst and won in a second set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6(3). 

The Huskers trailed 2-3 with two matches left on Courts Two and Three. Shepp faced No. 85 Bostrom Poulsen on Court Two. After losing 7-6 (3) in the first and winning the second 6-3, Shepp eventually fell 1-6, to clinch Baylor’s 4-2 match victory. Sysoev’s match against Koenig on Court Three was left unfinished (6-7(3), 6-3, 1-5).

The Big Red will hit the road for a Valentine’s Day matchup against Ole Miss. The dual will take place on Friday, Feb 14th at 12 p.m. CST.
