Nebraska Set to Clash with No. 5 Penn State

The No. 4 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team heads east to face the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, March 16, at 2:30 p.m. (CT) at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. The meet will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network. 

Last Time Out

Last Saturday, Nebraska upset Ohio State, 325.650-321.450, and Yanni Chronopoulos, Chris Hiser and Taylor Christopulos won career titles. Chronopoulos put up career highs on pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars and high bar to earn the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. Christopulos also nabbed Specialist of the week for his second-place high bar routine to help secure the win for the Huskers. 
Additionally, Christopulos was named a Nissen-Emery award finalist on Tuesday.

Scouting the Competition

  • Penn State defeated then-No. 5 Illinois last weekend 321.750-312.550, with senior Josh Karnes winning three event titles and Matt Underhill taking home one for four titles. 
  • Penn State also upset No. 2 Stanford at its last home meet on March 1. 
  • Josh Karnes is a Nissen-Emery Award Finalist and is ranked fifth on high bar.
  • This is Penn State’s final matchup before preparing for the Big Ten Championships, April 4-5th. 

Rankings

No. 4 Nebraska is currently ranked in the top five on floor exercise (fourth), still rings (second), vault (second) and parallel bar (sixth). On the high bar, the Big Red is ranked seventh and sixth on the pommel horse. Chase Mondi is ranked second on floor and fifth on vault. Hiser is fourth on the pommel horse, and James Friedman is eighth. Luke James is eighth on vault, and Alex Nitache is seventh on parallel bars. On high bar, Christopulos is ranked sixth.
