University Park, Pa. - The No. 4 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team took a narrow 0.2-point loss (329.050-328.850) to the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday.
Penn State earned its share of the Big Ten Regular Season Championship after prevailing against the Huskers. Highlighting the Huskers’ performances were Taylor Christopulos claiming an event title on floor exercise, Chase Mondi on vault and Yanni Chronopoulos winning the pommel horse title.
Floor
Christopulos claimed the first title of the day with a 14.50. PSU’s Josh Karnes and Askeli Karsikas took second and third. Nathan York nailed a 13.85 for fourth place. The final Huskers on the floor were Luke James for sixth (13.35) and Mondi (13.10) for seventh. Penn State snatched the floor score with a 55.55 to Nebraska’s 54.80.
Pommel Horse
Chronopoulos took his first pommel horse title with a 14.20, and York finished just behind him with a 13.70 for second. Penn State’s Kacper Garnczarek just missed York with a 13.65. Travis Wong had a sixth-place finish with 13.45, and Christopulos was right behind Wong with 13.40 for seventh place. The Huskers took this event 54.75 to the Nittany Lion’s 54.050.
Still Rings
Asher Cohen hit a new career high with a stick for second place, with Chris Hiser also tying for second with 13.90. Chronopoulos followed suit with another stick for a 13.85 for third. James Friedman went 13.45. PSU’s Matthew Underhill had the event title 14.10. Nebraska took its second event of the meet with a 55.20-54.00. At the halfway mark, Nebraska led Penn State to 164.75-163.600
Vault
Mondi increased from a previous high of 14.20 to 14.35 for his third event title of the season, tying with Matt Cormier. The Huskers took three, four and five in the event. Christopulos surpassed his career high of 14.15 with a 14.20 on vault for fourth place. James had a fifth-place routine for 14.05 in a three-way tie, tying with Landon Simpson and Michael Jaroh.
Parallel Bars
Christopulos kept the Huskers ahead of Penn State with a third-place routine, scoring 13.80. Cole Partridge fought for fourth with a 13.65 just ahead of Chronopoulos’ 13.600 for fifth. Joey Pepe rounded out the Huskers with seventh (13.35). Penn State took the first and second spots and took the event narrowly, 54.70-54.40 on p-bars.
High Bar
Partridge and Max Odden continued Nebraska’s success on the high bar with a 13.80, tying for third place. Chronopoulos scored a 12.95 to grab sixth, and Christopulos took last place with a 12.30.
Up next, Nebraska heads back home for senior night, facing No. 7 Michigan on Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m. (CT). The meet will be broadcasted on BTN, and there will be a Herbie t-shirt giveaway for fans.
