The No. 20 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team grabbed first place at the Ameritas Masters Classic at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night.
The Huskers moved to 8-11 on the season (3-6 Big Ten).
Whitney Jencks claimed the all-around title with a career-high 39.400. Jencks and Spence both grabbed a share of the bars title with a 9.900. Emma Simpton grabbed the beam title with a season-high 9.925. Sophia McClelland earned the floor title with a career-high 9.950.
NU was first with a 196.450, Iowa State took second with a 196.100, TWU was third with a 195.975 and Temple ended in fourth with a 194.550.
Rotation One
The Huskers opened the night on vault, notching a 48.925. Ayzhia Hall led NU with a season-high 9.850, followed by Whitney Jencks scoring a career-high 9.825 and Isabel Sikon with a 9.800. Katie Kuenemann (9.725), Sophia McClelland (9.725) and Emma Spence (9.725) finished out the lineup.
Rotation Two
NU moved to bars, where it scored a 49.075. Spence and Jencks both notched a 9.900 – Jencks’ tied her career best. McClelland (9.825), Emma Simpton (9.750) and Olivia Burns (9.700) followed for the Big Red. This marked Burns’ first collegiate competition. Lauren Hollifield (8.950) rounded out the lineup.
Rotation Three
Behind a season-high 9.925 from Simpton, Nebraska scored a 49.275 on beam. Sikon (9.875), and Spence (9.850) both followed her for the Huskers. Jencks tied her season high with a 9.825. McClelland (9.800) and Hall (9.775) finished the rotation.
Rotation Four
The Big Red concluded the night on floor, earning a 49.125. McClelland led the team with a 9.900, followed by Jencks (9.850) and Allie Gard (9.825). Reese Baechle (9.800), Spence (9.750) and Lauren Homecillo (9.750) rounded out the scoring.
Up Next
NU will kick off the postseason by traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take part in the Big Ten Championships. The Huskers will compete in Session 1, which starts at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Crisler Center. Nebraska will compete against No. 23 Ohio State, Rutgers and Washington. It will be streamed live on the Big Ten Network.
