After two-straight road conference matches, the No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team returns home to host No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 72 Minnesota. The Huskers (10-5, 0-4 B1G) will host the Badgers (10-1, 3-0 B1G) on Saturday, March 22 and will face the Gophers (8-8, 0-3 B1G) on Sunday, March 23. Both matches will start at noon (CT).
Head Coach German Dalmagro seeks to notch his 25th dual win at Nebraska this weekend, as well as the team’s first conference victory of the season. Husker sophomore Maria Taranova currently leads the Big Red in spring singles wins, with a 10-1 record. On the doubles court, seniors Lucy Loy and Ana Zamburek have notched six spring victories, helping the Huskers earn nine doubles points on the year.
No. 18 Wisconsin (10-1, 3-0 B1G)
History: Nebraska leads the all-time series, 8-3. Wisconsin defeated the Huskers last season, but Nebraska tallied a pair of victories over the Badgers in 2021.
Wisconsin is currently on a nine-match win streak, notably defeating Illinois, Northwestern, Harvard, Arkansas and Arizona State. Individually, the Badgers have two ranked singles players (No. 5 Maria Sholokhova and No. 76 Taylor Cataldi) and three ranked doubles teams (No. 19 Sholokhova/Mukhortova, No. 42 Cataldi/Reynoldson and No. 85 Sholokhova/Johnson).
No. 72 Minnesota (8-8, 0-3 B1G)
History: Nebraska leads the all-time series, 13-4, with the Huskers winning the last five meetings between the teams.
Minnesota has no ranked singles players or doubles teams, but Aiva Schmitz currently leads the way with nine singles victories. Although the Gophers are currently on a two-match losing skid, the team does have notable wins over Iowa State, Missouri and Boise State.
The Huskers are coming off the fall individual season in which the team tallied 34 single wins. Taranova led the Big Red in fall singles wins with seven, and had a stellar freshman season in which she earned a 23-8 record, the most wins by a freshman since 2010.
In the 2023-24 season, led by head coach Dalmagro his first year at NU, the Huskers went 14-11. The team accomplished two Big Ten Tournament wins for the first time in program history and senior Raphaelle Lacasse was named an All-Big Ten First Team honoree.
