Huskers Drop Tight 4-3 Match to No. 17 Wisconsin

Despite winning the doubles point and tallying two singles wins, the Nebraska women’s tennis team (10-6, 0-5 Big Ten) fell 4-3 to No. 17 Wisconsin (11-1, 4-0 Big Ten) at home Saturday afternoon. 

Action against the Badgers started with doubles. Ana Zamburek and Lucy Loy dominated on Court 1 to notch a win against Wisconsin’s Maria Sholokhova and Ariel Johnson, 6-2. This marked their seventh spring victory. On Court 5, Wisconsin earned the win as Tianna Rangan and Ekaterina Ivanova topped Maria Taranova and Natalia Trigosso 7-5. The doubles point was decided on Court 3 where Emma Rizzetto and Reya Lee Coe battled and defeated Wisconsin’s Taylor Cataldi and Ellison Reynoldson, 7-5. 

Singles play started with the Huskers up 1-0. Wisconsin won the first singles point as Loy fell on Court 5 to Johnson (6-1, 6-3), but Nebraska responded quickly to give the Huskers a 2-1 lead as Taranova won on Court 3 over Ivanova (6-1, 7-5). On Court 2, Rizzetto fell to Cataldi (6-4, 6-3). The last three matches came down to third-set tiebreakers. Sholokhova defeated Zamburek on Court 1 (6-2, 1-6, 6-3) and Miyoshi topped Jacobson (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) to tie it up 3-3. The win came down to Court 4, Reynoldson defeated Coe to give Wisconsin the 4-3 win.  

Up next, the Huskers stay at home to take on Minnesota, Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT)
